The Isle of Wight region
A trip to the Isle of Wight is like stepping back in time. From the moment you step foot on the ferry a more tranquil pace of life takes hold, and a relaxing holiday is in store. The weather on the island is generally better than that experienced on the mainland, and sunshine records indicate that year round warmer and sunnier weather is to be found.
Cowes area
Cowes is known the world over as the mecca of yachting and any visit to the town would not be complete without a stroll along the promenade to the Royal Yacht Squadron 2 minutes away, where many regattas start and finish (don't forget to cover your ears when the cannons fire to signal the start and finish of the racing!)
The pedestrianised high street has chandlers and nautical clothing shops as well as a multitude of pubs and restaurants where sailors relay tales of their day afloat.
There are some lovely walks within close proximity....follow the river path to Newport or into the forest. Further afield, there are a number of walks taking in landmarks such as Tennyson Down etc. Several guide book at the house provide further details of these.
Osborne House in East Cowes, ( a short hop on the chain ferry across the River Medina ) is well worth a visit. It was the Summer Home of Queen Victoria for many years, and indeed she passed away here. The house and gardens is open to visitors during the Summer months, and gives an interesting insight into the life of a monarch in the late 19th Century.
Alum Bay near Yarmouth is the home to the famous coloured sands. A chairlift operates from the Needles Pleasure Park down to the beach, and in the Pleasure Park children will enjoy filling shapes with the coloured sand.
Ventnor on the south side of the Island enjoys a microclimate of its own. The Botanical Gardens have a variety of unusual plant life. The town itself is perched on a hill and there are several pubs and restaurants overlooking the sea where one can spend a pleasant day watching the world go by.
Blackgang Chine is a Pleasure Park built on the edge of a cliff on the south side of the Island. There are various fairground type rides, plus Wild West Land, Dinosaur Land, Haunted House and a variety of different attractions to keep the children entertained.
How to get there
Red Funnel Ferries and Wightlink operate car and fast cat services from Southampton, Portsmouth and Lyminton.
