Facebook - Crew's Nest Cowes, Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight region

Best known as the world's premier yachting centre, Cowes is the island's main port with a natural harbour at the mouth of the Medina River. Cowes and East Cowes grew from a huddle of fisherman's shacks around two coastal forts built by Henry VIII on opposite banks of the River Medina and named after the two off-shore sandbanks or cows.

East Cowes is where you will find Osborne House, former seaside holiday home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and preserved much as it was when the Queen died here in 1901. Nearby is St Mildred's Church at Whippingham, where the royal family worshipped. Both buildings were designed by the Prince Consort.

The beautiful and historic town of Newport is situated in the centre of the Isle of Wight and is its principal town centred on two elegant squares with fine Georgian and Victorian town houses. The impressive colonnaded Guildhall was designed by John Nash and built in 1816, with clock tower added in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It now houses the Museum of Island History and the Tourist Information Centre. To unearth even more Island history, spend some time at Carisbrooke Castle situated on the outskirts of the town.

Visually, the Isle of Wight’s area of outstanding natural beauty is dominated by chalk. This forms both the Island's eastwest backbone and its most famous landmark, the bright white stacks of the Needles. On the north coast, are the low clay cliffs, salt-marsh and mud-flats of the Hamstead Heritage Coast.

Cowes

Shopping in the narrow pedestrianised High Street is a delight, with some excellent shops, many catering for the yatching fraternity. The town also has an array of fashionable shops, gift shops, delicatessens, cafe's, restaurants and pubs. Many sailing reggattas take place and sometimes there is the opportunity to book rides in ribs around the solent.

Above the High Street and over looking the Solent is Northwood House and Park. This classical style mansion was built in 1837 and given to the town in 1929, together with 26 acres of grounds, which provide public ameneites.. At the edge of the park stands St Mary's Church, it's landmark clock tower, designed by John Nash, was retained when the church was rebuilt in 1867.

There are many festivals held on the Island and Regattas. Cowes Week is held in August where the sailing fraternity decend upon Cowes where not only sailing takes place but stalls selling food and drink alongside fantastic live music, definitely a place to party.

Visit Osborne House and many National Trust properties.

Call a water taxi for a ride up the Medina River to the Folly Pub where you can sit outside and watch the sail boats go by.
