About the home

Gurnard Marsh is an area on the north shore of Isle of Wight just to the west of Cowes. It is an ideal location for many different types of visitors including families, walkers and ramblers, cyclists and dinghy sailors. It has long been a popular holiday spot with rows of beach side chalets dating back to the 1920's, but now most of the old rail carriages and timber chalets have now gone. The replacement buildings are built to today's standards but designed to be in keeping with the beach side chalets they replaced.

The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight is one of the most idyllic yet exciting parts of Britain. A place that seems to exert an irresistible attraction that brings visitors back time after time.

Popular from Victorian times as a holiday resort, the Isle of Wight is known for its natural beauty and as home to the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, a town that hosts a world famous annual regatta. Colloquially, it is known as "The Island" by its residents. It possesses a rich history including its own brief status as a vassal kingdom in the fifteenth century, home to poet Alfred Lord Tennyson and Queen Victoria's much loved summer residence and final home Osborne House. Its maritime history encompasses boat building and sail making through to the manufacture of flying boats and the world's first hovercraft. It is home to the Isle of Wight Festival, which, in 1970, was one of the largest rock music events ever held, with estimates reaching 600,000 attendees, overtaking the record set at Woodstock a year earlier. The Isle of Wight Festival was revived in 2002 to critical acclaim, headliners in 2006 were Coldplay, Foo Fighters and The Prodigy. The island is also one of the richest fossil locations for dinosaurs in Europe.

In AD 686, it became the last part of the British Isles to convert to Christianity, almost a century after the rest of Great Britain.

The Cowes / Gurnard area

Gurnard is on the Solent and is renowned for being one of the best sailing areas in the world. More information on local sailing can be found at the Gurnard Sailing Club and Cowes Week websites.
The Isle of Wight is renowned for its range and quality of cycling terrain. It has a network of quiet lanes and bridle ways and an ever increasing number of railway line to cycle path conversions.

There is a well signposted Round the Island road route which passes the front doors of both of our properties.
We are well equipped to cater for cyclists and their equipment and both of our properties have secure bicycle storage and water hoses in the rear gardens.

WightLink has car ferry services between Lymington and Yarmouth, and Portsmouth and Fishbourne and a passenger only service between Portsmouth and Ryde.

Red Funnel operates between Southampton and Cowes. Its passenger only service goes to West Cowes and its car ferry service goes to East Cowes.

“A little place of island bliss” Found "Starboard" to be a lovely house, spotlessly clean and equipped and furnished with everything you'd need for a holiday. Basically exactly what you'd like your own island hide away to be like with a great garden for the children to play. Very well situated for getting around the island and with an excellent bar/restaurant, The little Gloster, just across the road from where you can have a drink whilst watching the Solent do its thing.

“Fantastic accommodation - clean, spacious and perfectly located for Island life” Our stay here has been wonderful - we are regular visitors to the isle of wight but had never stayed in the accommodation before. I can honestly say it exceeded our expectations and the photos on the website do not do not justice. The facilities were exceptional and the standard of cleanliness was first class. Towels and bedding were really lovely quality which is unusual in self catering facilities. Washing powder is provided which was great as having 2 small children meant we had to unexpectedly use the washing machine a number of times! Lovely touch of tea, coffee and sugar all provided and even a pint of milk in the fridge waiting for us! The trip truly felt like we were staying with friends - we will definitely return and will recommend to friends and family. Lovely location and exceptional accommodation.

“We knew we'd have a great holiday the moment we stepped through the door” We couldn't ask for more in a holiday home. The decor and cleanliness couldn't be faulted. It was like staying in a luxury suite in a hotel. The kids loved it, the beds were comfortable and there was plenty of space to play. There is a nice big garden out the back as well. Gurnard is a great bolthole and it was fantastic being so close to the sea, we could watch the boats pass all day. We even saw a submarine! As a base it is great for getting to anywhere on the island, nothing is far away. It isn't far from Cowes ferry terminal and the town centre. We are hoping to return in the summer and stay in Starboard again.

“7 star accommodation” I hear that the Burj Al Arab in Dubai is the only 7 star hotel in the world and I think Starboard is the 7 star equivalent for UK seaside holiday accommodation. It was spotlessly clean and the owners had thought of everything you could possibly need for your stay. If you wanted to do a full roast dinner the kitchen was fully equipped for that too. Everything was top quality and the beds were really comfortable. Having a en suite plus a separate bathroom was a godsend. The marine/nautical touches were lovely. It's much bigger than it looks on the web and has plenty of space for two little ones (aged 3 and 1) to play and run about. Placed just a moment from the sea (which you can see from the front windows) my energetic grandson liked nothing better than 'going over to the sea' to find big pebbles to throw into the water and then run away from the waves coming in. It's ideally placed for wherever you want to go on the Island and there was lots information provided on this too. Strangely we found that nearly everywhere we went was just 33 minutes away (according to the Satnav) - spooky! Carl was very helpful, both on line and on his visit to us to make sure we were happy, which of course we were. We had such a lovely holiday I didn't want to leave - in fact I could happily live there all year!

“Excellent chalet, great holiday” Excellent place, great place for our holiday with two young children. Very clean, comfortable and well thought-out chalet, with everything we needed. Owners very helpful and thoughtful, with some nice goodies on arrival. Highly recommended.

“Delightful high quality holday "beach hut"” It was lovely to find comfortable beds and all new facilities in a lovely beach type property close to Gurnard and opposite a fabulous restaurant. Lovely walking into Cowes along the sea front and would thoroughly recommend to anyone. Great for 2 couples as there are 2 bathrooms and bedrooms.

“Starboard provides excellent accommodation with everything you need” We had a great week in the Isle of Wight using Starboard as a base. We were very impressed with the accommodation. What made it stand out compared with other self-catering properties we have stayed in was the high level of cleanliness and decor. It is both comfortable and relaxing. The decor is great with modern kitchen gadgets: everything looked fairly new. The layout provides space and there is a garden with table and chairs. The owners live down the road and were really friendly and helpful. Gurnard is a quiet location with two shops, pub, cafe and a restaurant directly opposite Starboard. There can be a little bit of noise - the double bedroom is on the small road and opposite the restaurant - but it didn't cause us any problem. If you want a relaxing place to stay but still within easy reach of the rest of the island then this is an ideal location. Highly recommended.

“Fantastic immaculate, quiet, seaside chalet” Excellent fast service with booking and help with ferry crossings. The accommodation was perfect, newly decorated in a tasteful manner with everything provided for a comfortable stay. We especially loved the local treats left for us on the table and the fresh milk in the fridge was a thoughtful gesture for those who have experienced a long journey and just want a cuppa! Ideal location for quiet seaside stay with easy access to local pub, restaurant and newsagents and lovely walks on the beach. We will definitely be back!

“We want to go back” When we arrived at Starboard we entered to find the most delightful property, perfect for our needs. Everything was there including milk, washing up liquid and bin bags (something we find missing from a lot of holiday properties) and we were also treated to some delicious cookies, tasty apple juice and, to my partners appreciation, a good selection of ale - all local produce from the Isle of Wight. You can step out onto the porch to view the sea and the coastal path takes you to some wonderful views. Across the road is the Little Gloster restaurant which is definately worth a visit. We look forward to returning to Starboard as not only was it such a comfortable place to stay and well located but we also have much more we want to see on the Island.

“best IOW holiday ever” accommodation was beyound our expectations, could not fault the facilities, the garden was safe for our 4 year old daughter, our 13 year old disabled daughter who has walking difficulties and has poor eye sight had no problems with the few steps leading to the front door, also the en suite shower room was perfect for her, a local shop was a short walk away,Cows & Newport a short drive hours were spent crabing at the nearby tidal creek owners of the property were at hand for help and advice about the accommodation and places to visit while stayiny on the island

“Everything we expected from the website and so much more!” Everything about our stay was 5 stars! The accomodation was immaculate and so tastefully decorated. We had everything we needed (including a dishwasher and washing machine) which were fantastic. The owners communicated well by email and even booked our ferries for us. When we arrived there was a "Welcome Pack" which comprised of local Beers, Biscuits and Apple Juice. Along with Fairtrade tea and coffee and milk in the fridge - after a long journey this really was welcomed. Michele and Carl popped in to show us how everything worked and offer advice about where to go etc and throughout the week we on hand if we had any questions. We would definately recommend to our family and friends and will hopefully return ourselves. Thanks Michele and Carl!

“Everything we could have wished for.” A lovely place to stay, everything we needed as a family with a baby and in an excellent state of decorative order and cleanliness. Very well equipped with quality furnishings. A great location on the island with a sea view. Welcoming and helpful owners. Couldn't fault anything!
