Gurnard is an uncommercial quiet seaside village with a shingle and sand beach, a promenade and 1930s beach huts. Located on the North of the Island, Gurnard Bay looks across the Solent towards the South West with lovely views to Yarmouth and beyond right across to the New Forest and back to Southampton water where one can watch cruise ships arriving and leaving. We do have the most fabulous sunsets.
A children's play area is on the green behind the gurnard beach huts the centre piece of which is a galleon ship and lots more equipment besides. Gurnard Sailing Club has a big membership of dingy sailors and temporary membership is available www.gurnardsc.org.uk English Heritage runs Osborne House at East Cowes and was Queen Victoria's home and is open to the public and well worth a visit. The famous Needles on the western tip of the island is managed by the National Trust and has wonderful walks and views from Tennyson Down.
The Cowes / Gurnard area
Cowes and Gurnard are famous for their yachting events with Gurnard Dinghy Week at the end of July and the UKs largest yachting regatta Cowes Week at the beginning of August.
Nowhere is far on the island and we have large Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) with fabulous buildings and locations to visit. The island is one of the very few places that only has red squirrels. There are numerous festivals and events throughout the year. Such as IOW Rock Festival (June), Old Gaffers regatta at Yarmouth (June). Walking Festivals (May & September), Cycling Weeks, Garlic Festival(August), Steam & Classic car Weekends, Country Shows. Bestival in September.
Gurnard Village has a Nisa store selling everything from groceries, wines, fresh bread daily, cash machine, lottery outlet etc., newsagent with fax and photocopying facilities, payphone, The Portland Pub which has home cooked food and welcomes children, sky sports etc., a Hairdressers and All Saints Church.
Gurnard Bay has the Waters Edge Cafe' right on the beach which is very popular for breakfasts, lunches, coffees and is licenced - a great place to watch the sailing and beautiful sunsets. The Little Gloster Restaurant at the western end of Gurnard Bay - fabulous location. The Woodvale Hotel also overlooks the Bay.

We arrived and there were plenty of "oooooo's and ahhhhhh's"! This is a stunning cottage, a perfect base for a stay on the Island. Facilities fantastic, rooms really quite large, lots of space. Great kitchen, perfect for lazy lunches and lots of chatting! Greeted by a 'welcome tray' which was a great touch after a long journey. Jan & Nick were great - just welcomed us and let us know where they were should we need anything, then left us to it. Perfect break - Thankyou. |
