The Loire Valley / Mayenne region
The beautiful Mayenne region links Basse Normandy and Loire and both regions can be accessed from the cottage. The climate is generally colder in the winter and hotter in the summer than the south of England. You can literally get all four seasons in a day in this area at certain times of the year so be prepared. The landscape is full of rolling green fields and small forrests with lots of grazing cows everywhere. There is a lot to discover in this area and the pace of life is relaxed.
Courcite area
Small friendly village with church, patisserie, shop and bar . The bar serves a great simple French lunch at 10 euros which includes starter, main, cheese, desert, coffee, 1/4 of red wine and lots of bread! Friendly barman/waiter who loves practising his English on you, and if you have too many of the Vin rouge, you are just 30 seconds from home for a siesta! Le Mans is a 40 minute drive away and perfect for a day out shopping and cafe / bar hopping. The hourly trains to Paris that take 58minutes mean it is also a great place to park the car and whizz off to the capital for some serious retail therapy and culture. Closer to home every village seems to have a great place to meet and chill in. The locals are so friendly and the pace of life is exactly what you expect. Within 15 km there are two lakes for both swimming and fishing or just a day out with a picnic, an open air swimming pool, and horse riding. Laval has a fabulous Golf course and there are plenty of historical buildings to visit nearby. Also Bagnoles-de-l'Orne a Spa town has a great golf course, a casino and a small lake. There is a beautiful lake 20 minutes from the cottage towards Mezangers with a sandy shallow beach and tall trees, pedalowing, wind surfing and a cafe, ideal for a day out and never too busy. The adventure forest Alpes Mancelles is also just 20 minutes away and has tree rope games for both adults and children, it is near the beautiful forest of Pre-en -Pail Drive south into Loire heartland ( 2hrs ish ) and enjoy a day at the vineyards of Vouvray, Saumur or Anjou, also within this area are the stunning Loire Chateaux, particularly the Chateau Chenonceau. Nearer to home, Mayenne is a pretty town with a great walk along the River, and a lot of history. There is also a Zoo at Fleche worth a trip with the kids!
How to get there
Many ferry options, but the most economical is Speed Ferries from Dover to Boulogne and then a 3 hour 45 minute drive to the cottage. Also economical is the Newhaven to Dieppe crossing, a 3 hours drive from Dieppe but the crossing is longer so it depends on your sea legs!
Other options include overnight ferry from Portsmouth to either Caen ( Brittanny ferries ) or Le Havre ( LDLInes ) and then 2 1/2 hour drive. This can be a good option as you lose no holiday time as you are travellin overnight but as the crossing is long and you need a berth it is more expensive.
You can also fly and hire a car in France, there are airports at Tours, Nantes, Dinan. Although it will be a minimum 2 hour drive.
