The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region

This is an area steeped in the history of rthe Cathars with their incredible castles perched high up on the mountains. The period of the Knights Templar and the mystery of the Holy Grail is imbued in this part of France.

Read Labyrinth by Kate Moss or the Da Vinci Code. Wherever you go there is evidence of ancient sites. Roman Baths in Alet les Bains. However it is also a perfect place to birdwatch or to explore the myriad of wild flowers which carpet the countryside in spring and early summer - or even just walking in the mountains.

It is has a typical French mountain climate with hot days in summer, evocative misty mornings in spring and autumn often breaking into beautiful warmth. Snow in the winter with the option of skiing nearby.

Couiza area

Rennes Les Bain, Rennes Le Chateau , Alet les Bains to name but a few of the wonderful villages and towns, There are abbeys, churches castles (of course) and cathedrals all within driving distance. Forests, lakes, the River Aude and of course the Mediterranean. the Spanish border is only 2 hours drive. How about a visit to the Dali Museum.

Carcassonne is a wonderful example of a restored Medieval City, although the town of Mirepoix (which boasts the best market around on Mondays) is not to be missed. Old Perpignan is beautiful and the City has plenty to offer.

There are plenty of local festivals in the towns and villages all through the summer - we have always felt welcome. Lots of music drama often outside in the balmy evenings. Perfect!

To the right of the Kitchen is the Dining Room in the old part of the house with a large fireplace that burns beautifully.

The winding staircase leads to the next floor consisting of 3 double bedrooms sleeping 6. Each room has the option of a double bed or 2 single beds. Each bedroom has an electric radiator. There are electric blankets available too. All bedlinen and towels are provided at a cost of £5 per person per week. The bathroom has a wonderful view of the mountainside.

The large Sitting Room is light and airy. It has 2 single sofa beds and 1 double sofa bed if more sleeping accommodation is required. There is a wood burner for your use if the spring or autumn evenings are chilly – rarely necessary in the summer but essential in winter and extremely efficient. There is a DVD player available with a selection of DVD's for your use.

Further details outdoors:
From the Sitting Room the French doors lead to the terrace where there is a large table and chairs for outdoor eating and a BBQ. The views are fantastic and even in early summer the highest mountain is snow-capped.

There is a small upper garden leading to some steps which take you to the swimming pool. It should be possible to use the pool from the middle of May until the end of September but it is dependent on the local weather conditions. There is a large path which leads from the pool down to the front of the house where another outside table and chairs enables you to enjoy the morning.
