The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region

The Var region of Provence enjoys sunshine through out the summer months, even in the winter the temperature can reach the early 20s at mid-day. In the summer months temperatures reach 30 degrees or more.
It has some spectacular scenery; around Brignoles there are pretty hill-top villages, our village of Montfort included, and dense forests of oak and pine broken by terraced vineyards.
The central location of our village house gives you the opportunity to explore Provence. The mountains in the north have medieval villages such as Cotignac with tree-shaded squares and a market on a Tuesday morning. The area has plenty of local historic interest. Further a field spectacular Roman architecture can be found at Arles, Avignon and Aix-en Provence. Le Thoronet and la Celle are beautiful medieval abbeys nearby. There are many beautiful beaches to visit to the south between St. Tropez and Toulon. The proximity of the A8 motorway means that the cities of Nice, Marseille and Monte Carlo are easily reached in a day.
The Cotignac / Montfort sur Argens area
The Var's regional capital Brignoles is a lively medieval market town and the surrounding vineyards produce some of the region's most renowned wines. In addition to the weekly market on Saturday, the town has several supermarkets, restaurants and plenty of sports facilities. Every summer the town hosts a three-day festival, Les Médiévales, with colourful parades, demonstrations of medieval arts and crafts, jousting tournaments and plenty of music and dancing.
Brignoles has one of the region's top equestrian centres and if you are a keen golfer, the famous Barbaroux golf course. The largest aqua park in France is near Frejus 50 km away. Hikers can obtain details of walks in the area from the local tourist office. The hills and forests are home to a fascinating array of flora and fauna.
The local food is excellent, delicacies include truffles and wild mushrooms, sheep's milk cheeses, olives and the region's delicious pale pink rosé wines. There are some excellent restaurants in the area, including one at the wonderful 12th century abbey of La Celle, a village just outside Brignoles. Many of the local vineyards will offer tours of the wineries and tasting sessions.
Dominated by its twelfth century château, the former and only residence of the Commander of the Knights Templar, for the whole of Provence (today in private hands), this peaceful Provençal village overlooks the banks of the river Argens.
Local shops include two general stores with the famous 'Chez Georgette' who is open from when she wakes up until she goes to bed, even on Christmas day. Georgette started in 1943 as trainee and has owned the shop since 1947. The village baker caters for all your needs and is renowned in the area. There is also a Post office and a charming restaurant 'La Petite Marmite' with traditional food and family atmosphere with menus from 13,5€.
The village is visited twice a week by a fishmonger and the vegetable man.
It would be best to visit the Office de Tourisme and see Alexandra (who can't wait to speak English) for further information on the different activities in the village and surrounding area, brocantes, fetes, etc

Southampton to Avignon is our favourite as Avignon airport is so small and friendly never any delays with Flybe or to Toulon (Hyeres) with Ryan Air then Marseille and last of all Nice with major airlines from most locations. Or by car quiet an easy run down.

The house was so tastefully decorated in calming tones and shabby chic furnishings. It felt like being at our own home, rather than a rental house. A very serene village and friendly neighbours. And, the area was perfect for getting away. The lavender fields were in bloom and soooo beautiful! We also visited many more fabulous places and areas farther afield in Haute Provence. Dealing with the owners was very pleasant. We had an outstanding time and we hope to come back … Thank you! |
