As you step onto the flagstone floors of this 400 year old ‘Maison de Maitre’ you’re immediately aware of history and luxury.

From the vaulted hall you enter into a stylish living/dining room which is separated by an archway from the very large and well-equipped kitchen.

Both have access to the charming courtyard (great for outdoor eating and use of the barbecue) which leads into the walled garden. In this oasis of relative calm you sunbath on the terrace, find shade under the fig or apricot tree or take a dip in the roman-bassin style pool.

Throughout the house, the décor is simple and stylish with the original features having been carefully restored with local materials in authentic Provencal style.

Each of the five bedrooms is very light and airy, tastefully decorated, and has its own private bathroom with luxury fittings. Rooms can be made up with large single or super-king-sized double beds.

The house is situated on the main square, right in the heart of this small but active (and very French!) village. Across the ‘Place’ you'll find the local boulangerie and boucherie, down the road the grocers and pharmacy and within a stones throw are two bars and a restaurant.

The village of Varages (famous for it’s production of ‘Faiencier’ i.e. fine pottery) is in the middle of the diverse attractions of this part of Provence. Go north and you find the lakes and mountains of ‘Les Gorges du Verdon’ ... Europe’s deepest river gorge; south and you have the sophistication of the Cote D’Azur … St Tropez, Cassie, Cannes. Out west is Aix-en-Provence, said to be the most beautiful city in Europe and all around the village are the endless olive groves and vineyards of the local farmers with their medieval villages and artisan markets.

The kitchen has been designed and set up for the possibility of holding cooking courses. So the cooker is a five burner piano style 'La Canche' (the Rolls-Royce of French cookers) and there are two Spanish stone sinks.

The bedrooms are large. They range from 25m2 to 36m2. Air-conditioning is fitted to the two largest bedrooms where the sun is it's most intense all day long.

Each bedroom has it's own private bathroom with hand-made 'Faience' (fine pottery) wash basin and WC. One of the bathrooms has a (authentic roll-top) bath the other four bathrooms have 'walk-in' showers. All are fitted with solid brass taps and shower units etc.

Further details outdoors

There are two terraces ... one just outside the kitchen and dinning room, the other at the end of the garden. Clients normally eat all their meals outside; at breakfast the air is beautifully fresh (before the Mediterranean sun becomes intense) and the evenings are wonderfully long and balmy. There is a fig and apricot tree in the garden which offer good shade for those that seek it, and fruit when the time is right. There are six luxury loungers around the pool.

There is parking for over 30 vehicles two minutes walk from the property.

There is a security deposit of 1000 euros.

Further details

The owner of the property, Ron Alldridge, before leaving the UK was a reporter for the BBC. So he asked some of his clients to “say a few words” on camera, at the end of their holiday.

Sandie from California and nine friends ...

Ron : I remember when you first arrived, you took one look at the house and said that your holiday was going to be great. Did it work out to be that great?

Sandie : It worked out to be better than great! The most important thing for us was to have a place that felt like 'home' and we truly now refer to this as 'our home'. You cannot even begin to imagine the comfort of having both privacy and large enough spaces that you can dine together, you can laugh and play games together, but you can go off and have a very relaxing spacious space of your own.

Jonathan and Clare and family ...

Ron : Thinking of the house and what you expected to find … did it all come up to your expectations?

Jonathan : For me, and the unique point to do with the house is the fact that it is in the village and you feel very much part of village life whilst you're here; going out and getting your bread in the morning … speaking to the local people about the history of the village, going to see 'le boule', drinking 'pastis' … that for me was the unique part of this holiday, being part of the village as apposed to being out on a hill somewhere where you could be anywhere in the Mediterranean.

Andrea and Christian from Germany ...

Ron : Did the house come up to your expectations ?

Andrea : Yes, I thought the pictures on the internet were great …. the bedrooms were huge every bedroom had it's own bathroom … and the kitchen, I love the kitchen, it was very spacious, very good to work in!

Christian : It was especially great coming with two families, it's spacious enough and everyone's still got their little private space and nice and comfortable … when you come somewhere on vacation you want to live better than you live at home … and that's what we did.

Christopher and Joanne plus family ...

Ron : How was the holiday?

Joanne : Oh lovely .. we've only had one week but we've been very relaxed … the most relaxed I think since we had our kids! The weather's been perfect and it's been so nice to be in the village … especially with small kids, because then you can just pop out and get a 'hot chocolate' in the coffee shop and just sit and watch the world go by. It's just been very relaxed, very relaxed.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region

They say in the tourist offices here that the area is 'blest' with sunshine 300 days a year. After twelve years of residence I can confirm that not only is it true, it's an under-estimation. The summer starts early so in June the temperature can easily be over 30 degrees each day. Then very seldom will we see any rain for three months. Most people head for Provence in the high summer, understandable when you have children at school, but spring and autumn are gorgeous here; the fields of poppies, sunflowers, and then the new leaves on the vines ... all quite spectacular.

Cotignac

Where to start. The area seems to have it all; from little villages with one old lady and two cats to the swelling wealth of the Mediterranean coast ... they are all within a short trip away.

The house is situated on the main square, right in the heart of this small but active (and very French!) village. Across the 'Place' you'll find the local boulangerie and boucherie, down the road the grocers and pharmacy and within a stones throw are two bars and a restaurant.
