The El Cibao/Amber Coast region

Holidays in the Dominican Republic north coast are about letting your cares drift away on tropical beaches. Add some tasty fruit cocktails and nights dancing to the irresistible Merengue vibe in a friendly bar and you get the picture. Our apartment is the perfect base for your stress free beach holiday. But don’t think that you will just be confined to the beach. While the white sand on Costambar Beach is brilliant for topping up your tan, there are exotic coral reefs, teeming with fish, along the coastline and inland the verdant mountains threaded with rushing rivers offer white water rafting. there is a buzzing night life in nearby Puerto Plata and whale watching trips to Samana.

Ocean World

Ocean World Adventure Park, Marina & Casino is the most complete entertainment complex of the Dominican Republic, located in Cofresi Beach, just 3 miles west from the town of Puerto Plata. This entertainment complex is made of an elegant Marina, a unique marine park that allows visitors to interact with marine mammals and the outstanding building where our clients will have the opportunity to enjoy restaurants, bars, and theatre with live dance show, casino and a disco-lounge.

Cable Car (Teleferico)

This is a tour that should not be missed during your stay in Puerto Plata. Located on the top of Mount Isabel (2555 feet or 855 meters above sea), this cable car offers you the beautiful panoramic ocean view and surrounding areas of Puerto Plata. It is one of the picturesque and most impressive excursions that can obtain a tourist upon visiting the Dominican Republic.

On top of the mountain you will find botanical gardens, a statue of Christ (similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), a restaurant and several souvenir shops. in addition, of course, to the breathtaking views of Puerto Plata and the surrounding ocean.

Admission fee: 200 pesos (less than US $8).

Amber Museum

Displays pieces taken from the amber mines in the Northerm Mountains with millennial fossils. The museum is located at Duarte Street #61, close to the Central Park. The building that houses the museum is considered a splendid sample of neoclassical architecture with Victorian influence. By the way it's open every day except Sunday, from 9 am until 5 pm. Tel. 809-586-2848.

San Felipe Fort

The Fuerte San Felipe (San Felipe Fort) is located on a small peninsula on the Bahia de Puerto Plata, the bay Columbus once had such high hopes for. The Fort is, in fact, the only vestige of Puerto Plata's colonial past. For a little admission fee, you'll be able to look in on a small historical museum, and the tiny cell in which the hero of the Independence movement, Juan Pablo Duarte, was briefly confined. You'll find a number of guides hanging around the entrance to the fort, who for a small fee, will give you a tour.

Costambar

Costambar

Costambar is a peaceful, gated, beach front community on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. It lies 5 miles west of Puerto Plata, 2 miles east of Cofresi and is only 20 minutes drive from General Gregorio Luperon International Airport at La Union. Security gates restrict access to unknown people making the area very safe. Nowhere in Costambar is far from the beach, but the apartment building is only 50 metres away so you can’t get much closer than that. The 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment is situated on Calle P. Billini, in peaceful area of Costambar. Several simple bars and restaurants on or near the beach sell a good range on local and fast food.

Costambar Beach

Costambar Beach is the place of endless summers. Soft white sand, palm trees, warm water and year round swimming are all within a 1 minute, easy stroll of your apartment. The sea is calm and safe with any large waves and strong currents being kept away by the coral. During the week the beach is fairly quiet and used mainly by expats and holiday makers. Sundays tend to be busier when Dominicans appear with cool boxes, to enjoy their day off, stand around waist high in the water drinking and chatting. The whole atmosphere is laid back and good natured with Merengue and Bachata playing from cars and bars and people dancing to the rhythms.

Shops and Restaurants

Within a 10 minute walk of the apartment is the local supermarket, Yenny’s, supplying most of your daily needs. The closest beach bar is The Catamaran serving good food at reasonable prices and a power hour with 3×1 Cuba Libres from 6-7pm daily. They also hold a flea market on the last Saturday of each month, beginning at 10am. Biekes Bar, the first bar into Costambar, sells a good burger and has a blackboard for food specials during the week. There are too many small restaurants in Costambar to list so why not just take a stroll and see which gem you discover.

Climate

The majority of the Dominican Republic enjoys beautiful tropical weather all year round with an average annual temperature of 25C (77F). Warm and sunny conditions are experienced pretty much all over the country. There are slight variations between summer and winter months. Winter runs from November to April, humidity is lower and the evenings tend to be much cooler than in the summer months. The coastal regions generally experience daytime highs of around 28C (83F) and lows of about 20C (68F) in the evening at this time of year. The summer runs from May to October with average daily highs of 31C (87F) dropping to around 22C (72F) at night. However the higher humidity during these months can make it feel much hotter. The north of the country generally has its greater amount of rainfall between October and April. Heavy downpours can occur but the majority of this type of rainfall happens in short bursts. Most showers are soon over and the sun shining within half an hour. Generally long periods of sunshine and blue skies can be expected at any time of the year.
