The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is the closest of the Canary islands to the east coast of Africa. The temperature has a yearly average of 22 degrees, the summer months can easily reach the nineties and in winter the daytime temperature rarely drops below a very pleasant 70 degrees. This makes Lanzarote a great place to visit at any time of the year, and being an island there is always a pleasant sea breeze to keep you cool.
The islands architecture has been strongly influenced by the renowned artist Ceasar Manrique who designed many of the local places of interest which are well worth a visit, these include Mirador, Jameos Del Agua and the Cactus Gardens. It was also due to his input that there is a restriction on the building of high rise hotels and buildings with the one exception of the Grand Hotel in Arrecife which does seem to blend into the horizon.
Although a car is recommended to enjoy the island, local buses will take you to the nearby coastal areas of Puerto Del Carmen with a 2 mile 'strip' of bars, restaurants and shops as well as the Old Town with it's quaint port, streets, tapas bars and bodega's. Arrecife the Capital with a long golden beach and pedestrianised streets to help navigate a path to the shops and stores. Also Puerto Calero with a harbour full of yachts and cruisers that you can only dream of owning, with architectural charm reminicent of the old West Indies it's well worth a visit to sit and sip a cocktail.
Further afield is Playa Blanca which boasts fabulous beaches and a port where you can hop on a ferry to visit the island of Fuertaventura if your feeling adventurous.
There are so many places which are well worth a visit such as the National Park or the old town of Teguise where you can really grab a bargain at the Sunday market however, there is an information pack in the house which will help you decide just how YOU want to spend your time, there really is something to suit everyone, on this very special island.
Costa Teguise / El Palmeral area
In the local area there is so much to do, the water park is just around the corner and delights the kids and adults alike. For the golfers, the only golf club on the island is a few minutes by car and the clubhouse has a great bar and restaurant, think of playing a round in the December sunshine and you'll soon get the picture!
Costa Teguise is a laid back area and has some lovely bars, restaurants and shops, you can stroll into the centre in 25 minutes and there are plenty of places to stop along the way, it can also be accessed via the promenade which takes you past King Carlos' summer villa, he really is a neighbour! If you fancy a taxi back from town, it's never more than 4 euros, bargain.
Should you feel the need for some pampering the Beatriz Hotel has a fabulous Thalasso Spa and pool to relax and chill out. For those with more energy, the central beaches have dive schools and windsurfing rental/lessons if you fancy a challenge, again details for all this can be found in the information book.
The complex of El Palmeral is beautiful, there are a team of gardeners who keep the open areas in tip top condition and the pools are cleaned throughout the day. The area is made up of residential and rental properties so has a relaxed and homely atmosphere. There are 275 properties which include villas, houses and apartments all in pristine condition.
We think our house is lovely and will provide a home from home experience, bring your toothbrush and beach towels and you are all set to go!
How to get there
Fly to Arrecife airport, it is only 10 kilometres from the airport to the house. Taxis are readily available from the airport at any time. Be prepared for a wait on Thursday’s as this is the Island’s changeover day so the airport can get really busy. For cheap car hire try www.autoreisen.es and pick the car up at the airport for convenience. We use these all the time and have always had great service I will provide full directions to the house if driving from the airport when booking is completed.
Although a car is not essential it would give you the freedom to explore the island.
