The Lanzarote region
Lanzarote is a popular destination, yet the island has retained much of its older character, with its volcanic landscape greatly unaffected by tourism. Playa Blanca is a family resort with a quiet atmosphere and an emphasis on beach holidays, Playa Papagayo being the most well-known. The Montanas del Fuego are a fascinating geological site; you can take a camel ride up the volcanic slopes for great views across the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya.
There are tours to be taken across the almost lunar landscape and visitors can enjoy a meal at El Diablo panoramic restaurant.
Jameos del Agua caves were formed by volcanic eruption, and in the sixties were landscaped into a subterranean complex containing a swimming pool, nightclub and restaurant.
Puerto del Carmen is the island's most popular resort, with easy access to a long golden beach that stretches along the coast.
Teguise is a well preserved town with a lively handicraft market and folk dancing every Sunday. Nearby Mozaga is a centre of wine production on the island.
The Avienda de las Playas is where all the action takes place. Shops line the road all the way to Los Pocillos and when darkness falls it buzzes with activity as its bars and discos swing into action. Popular nightsopts included: The Big Apple, Waikiki Beach Club, Hippodrome and Charlies and the fun continues until around 3 or 4 am!
There is plenty of family entertainment too, and if you fancy a flutter, you can play American Roulette and Black Jack at the Casino - Over 18s only, and don't forget your passport!
Puerto del Carmen started life as a fishing village and it's picturesque harbour at the southern end of the resort is still very much in action. It is a lovely place to unwind over a drink and watch the fishing boats come and go, and if you wander into the square nearby, you will see locals playing boules.
When you feel energetic, there is plenty to do here. There are many companies offering water sports, snorkelling and scuba diving, or you can go riding with the Rancho Texas riding stables (recently converted to a theme park) in Puerto del Carmen itself, or Lanzerote a Caballo at Yaiza.
You can admire the underwater world from a submarine or a glass bottomed boat or try your hand at deep sea fishing!
There are also numerous excursions further afield - find yourself a copy of The Gazette or Lancelot magazines as these give lots of information about the island and what is going on.
The area has all year round sunshine, excellent restaurants, good shoppings and beautiful golden sandy beaches.
