The Sardinia region
Porto Rafael is set in a perfect location between cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation and the sea and it looks over the beautiful Arcipelago della Maddalena (a National Park composed of 7 islands). Visiting Sardinia in the early sixties, Count Raphael Neville, a Spanish-English aristocrat fell in love with this spot and decided to make it his permanent home. He built a very small nucleus of villas and the famous seaside 'Piazzetta' and tiny Church of Santa Rita, which still represent the heart of the village. In the late 1960's a British-Italian company built more villas around the original nucleus, using famous architects and taking care to maintain Count Neville's vision of perfect integration between construction and nature (Villa Canapiglia is one of the original hub of villas and it has been completely restored to its original beauty). To this day Porto Rafael has one of the strictest town planning laws and when traveling by sea one can hardly detect the villas on the side of the hill. Walking around the small village though one can admire the tasteful constructions that confirm the motto that Neville inscribed on his house: "dreaming is living."
Very close to Porto Rafael there is the busy town of Palau, with beaches, shopping, night life and boat tours to the islands.
A ferry leaves every 15/30 minutes to the island of La Maddalena and Caprera. The ride takes aboy 15 minutes. L' Isaola dei Gabbiani, a prime location for wind-surfers, is about 15 min drive and also offers beach restaurants and night clubs.f Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo are about 40 minutes away.
We also strongly suggest visiting the inland , the splendid ruggedness of the Supramonte mountains or the murales of Orgosolo.
Enjoy the sights, attractions and restaurants at your own pace and treat yourself to the best local produce. Have a perfect relaxing break soaking up the sun in this wonderful part of the country.
