The Sardinia region
Sardinia is the second large island in the Mediterranean sea with an interesting history. Over the centuries, from 1600 B.C. it was dominated by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, the Roman Empire, Vandals, Moors, Berbers and the Spanish. It gained independence in 1700 and became then part of Italy.
Its natural beauty became only known in the 1970ties when Aga Khan made the Costa Smeralda" to an "elite" vacation area for the millionaires and movie stars and with regular airplane and boat services the island started to become very popular and easy to reach .
The unspool coastlines, the white sandy beaches with rocky intervals and many outstanding headlines, the ever green-blue sea, the strong steady winds - ideal for surfers and sailers - an enchanting country side, good for hikers and bikers, 300 days per year of sun shine, little of no rain in summer and the good food makes Sardinia " a place to see and explore “, if you can avoid august when all Italians are on holiday, then you have Sardina for nearly to yourself.
Sardinia is home to a wide range of rare and uncommon plants and animals.
Environmental laws protect large forest exentions. The prehistoric “Nuraghi" are no all archeological sites.
Sardinia has only a few larger cities: Cagliari, Sassari, Alghero, Olbia, and the interior of the island is very scarcely populated.
The Costa Smeralda / San Pantaleo area
Bursting with character, this charming village is set around a picturesque piazza along with lively cafés and several artisan shops. With its stone-built cottages, stunning position and relaxed atmosphere, many artists have been inspired to take up residency. In the summer, the village boasts regular “feste” and a bustling weekly market, ideal for those looking to experience a piece of Sardinian culture. San Pantaleo is also well poised to explore the many beaches on the Costa Smeralda and the bay of Arzachena.The central location at the edge of the Costa Smeralda enables you to reach Porto Cervo with its cafés and restaurants, noble boutiques, marina, golf court and tennis courts in a 12 minute drive. And of course the Miles of beaches with crystal clear water, which gives the paradise its name – Costa Smeralda.

Stayed at this villa for one week as part of two family group of twelve. All rooms simply furnished but comfortable and all haev own en-suite. Well fitted kitchen etc and great outdoor spaces. Terrace has large table to seat 12 overlooking the hills and pool area also looked out over same hills. Lovely villa. |
