Villa | 4 bedrooms | sleeps 8
Villa Canapiglia is set in the legendary village of Port Rafael. One of the prime locations on the Costa Smeralda, it has maintained the original charm and flavour, and is untouched by mass tourism, since it has no hotels, but only residential villas. Continually patrolled by guards, the village has high security.
Being one of the original late 1960's villas, Canapiglia is set in a prime location, 5 min walk from the famous 'Piazzetta' and the sea, in a perfect spot between cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation. From the large terrace and rooftop one has a spectacular view of the sea, the town of Palau and the the beautiful Arcipelago della Maddalena (a National Park composed of 7 islands).
The villa offers a wonderful setting for a family holiday or a romantic break in one of the most beautiful seascapes in the world. There are several beaches at either walking distance or at a short drive away. The emerald sea of the islands of the Maddalena Archipelago is just a boat ride away.

The Sardinia region
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean sea and is famous for The beaches of Sardinia, running after one another in the almost 2000 kilometres of coast, sometime interrupted by rocky formations and port constructions, frame real paradise-like corners. The sea is famously clear and runs from shades of pastel blue to emerald, while fine sand or pebble shores give way to stretches of granite cliffs carved by time. Sardinia has both a mundane and a savage character. in the summer , when all the holiday makers flock to its beautiful beaches it can be quite festive and loud. One still can escape into its beautiful inland, so full of mystery and wildlife.
The food is excellent and in the summer many cultural activities take place.
Porto Rafael is set in a perfect location between cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation and the sea and it looks over the beautiful Arcipelago della Maddalena (a National Park composed of 7 islands). Visiting Sardinia in the early sixties, Count Raphael Neville, a Spanish-English aristocrat fell in love with this spot and decided to make it his permanent home. He built a very small nucleus of villas and the famous seaside ‘Piazzetta’ and tiny Church of Santa Rita, which still represent the heart of the village. In the late 1960’s a British-Italian company built more villas around the original nucleus, using famous architects and taking care to maintain Count Neville’s vision of perfect integration between construction and nature (Villa Canapiglia is one of the original hub of villas and it has been completely restored to its original beauty). To this day Porto Rafael has one of the strictest town planning laws and when traveling by sea one can hardly detect the villas on the side of the hill. Walking around the small village though one can admire the tasteful constructions that confirm the motto that Neville inscribed on his house: "dreaming is living."
Very close to Porto Rafael there is the busy town of Palau, with beaches, shopping, night life and boat tours to the islands.
A ferry leaves every 15/30 minutes to the island of La Maddalena and Caprera. The ride takes aboy 15 minutes. L' Isaola dei Gabbiani, a prime location for wind-surfers, is about 15 min drive and also offers beach restaurants and night clubs.f Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo are about 40 minutes away.
We also strongly suggest visiting the inland , the splendid ruggedness of the Supramonte mountains or the murales of Orgosolo.

Everything was perfect more than expected.
The house is big tbe view is fantastic.
The piaceta is at walking distance so is the yacht club, but you need to have a car.
Definitely the place to be.
Thank you so much for the wonderful review and rating. It is most appreciated.
If I could rate you as guests you would get 5 stars as well !

"Beautiful unique villa"
We stayed at Villa Canapiglia last month with our close family and two year old daughter for our wedding/honeymoon in Sardinia. The villa is beautiful and very traditionally decorated with each room having a personality of its own. It is set within a little maze of villas in the tiny but charming town of Porto Rafael which has a tiny Piazzetta and at least three very small but beautiful beaches within walking distance.
We enjoyed our stay and generally found the villa fulfilled our needs. The only negatives I would point out are that we had to watch our almost two year old very carefully as the villa and gardens were not particularly child-friendly but we anticipated this beforehand and were in a group so this was not a problem. Also we didn't feel like we could 100% relax in the villa as it has a lot delicate pieces of art etc. which made it feel like a show home or museum.
Saying that - without small children this would probably not have been such an issue!
My husband did in fact have an accident with one of the glass patio doors (he thought it was open as the glass was not visible and went to walk through it) the owner was great and had the door replaced in 24hrs but we were glad that the replacement was much more robust with a sticker on it so that this couldn't happen again.
All in all - a very memorable holiday in a very beautiful and original villa!
Hi Sarah and Chris,
Thank yo for taking the time to write a review. It is really appreciated. I am sorry you could not totally relax because you found the garden not child-friendly and there are nice (and breakable) things around the house. I think that what makes the house special. Anyway , we were already pondering wether to rent the house to guests with children and probably will stop doing so from now on. I am really glad you enjoyed your stay overall. Kind regards and thanks again, Paola

"Charming villa with spectacular sea views in a secluded setting."
The villa is full of character inside and out, from its unusual round seating area beside the fireplace to the amazing roof terrace with its built in seating. It has a pretty, mature garden and wonderful views from the terraces across the sea to Maddelana and the islands of the National Park.
It felt like, and is, a family holiday home, being very stylishly furnished and extremely well equipped, quite unlike the bare essentials often encountered in a standard holiday rental.
Porto Rafael is a most attractive and secluded development, the villas on the hillside cleverly blending in to the the rocky vegetation, but it is close to Palau where boats can be rented for trips to the amazing beaches and emerald water around the islands.
The villa is just a 5 minute walk to the small local beach and bar/restaurant. We would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

"Fabulous House, beautifully presented in an idillic location"
The villa is beautifully presented with stylish fittings and has many different lounging areas to relax and enjoy the amazing views this area has to offer of the islands. The village is quiet, relaxing and quite different to large built up areas with the villas blending into the rocks. We explored the area by car, and took a small boat out to explore the islands, the beaches are incredible alongside the azure waters. The villa itself has all the modern requirements you need and is luxurious throughout, can't be faulted at all. The village itself was very quiet at this time of year but has all you need and Palau is not far away.
