About this location
The Valenciana region
Welcome to this enchanting part of Spain. The region stretches from Alicante in the South, a bustling Port & City bordering along the coastline with a vibrant night life, to Valencia in the North, the city that created the Paella. The area is proud of its Tapas & stages many Fiestas including 'Las Fallas', Europe's famous spring festival. It is home to 22nd century city of 'Arts & Sciences', the famous Seaworld & recently hosted the Americas Cup.
The coastline is well known for its fine beaches, with its dramatic landscaping being host to a wide variety of wildlife, & many charming towns & villages such as Altea, Moraira & Javea nestling along the coast. Travelling inland a visit to The Jalon Valley is a must, where you can sample the wine in the local bodegas & experience the Saturday Market. There is of course the tourist Mecca of Benidorm which hosts superb white beaches, fantastic nightlife & several theme parks (listed below).
The World health Organisation recognises Javea as having one of the best climates in the world. With Temperatures in the summer ranging from 25 to 35 degrees accompanied with cooling Mediterranean winds; winter temperatures average 15 degrees with clear skies, asthma & allergy sufferers should find relief in this healthy near perfect climate.
Alicante airport is approx 90km drive & Valencia 100km. Spain's coastal infrastructure has improved immensely over the last 10yrs & travelling is a joy on the well maintained motorways & more importantly no traffic jams!!
Note: Motorways From Alicante & Valencia to Javea have Tolls so remember to bring a few Euros with you or have your credit card handy.
Javea was once a small fishing village which has now grown, unlike many other tourist destinations into three contrasting areas namely, The Old town, The Port & The Arenal. Javea is steeped in culture & surrounded with an amazingly beautiful landscape incorporating deep pine forests, vineyards & orange groves. The coastline has many coves & beaches sheltered by cliffs & mountains.
The Old town is typically Spanish & is characterised by its narrow streets defined by their unique architectural style. In the centre there is a beautiful church, an indoor market & many squares where you can sit & enjoy a tapas & watch the world go by.
Javea Port, which still maintains its small fishing fleet. Has a thriving fish market where you can purchase the day's fresh catch. Here you can feast on fresh sea food in the local restaurants all year round. A little further on is the Marina, with many luxurious yachts moored alongside more modest vessels. There is the pebbled beach of La Grava & numerous shops & sea front restaurants. The many interesting buildings including what we call the fisherman's church (La Mare de Due de Loreto) which supports a roof in the form of a ship. The Port is linked to the Arenal by the Benissero & Montanyar 1 beaches where many water sports are available. It is about a 30min flat walk between the Port & the Arenal & if you don't fancy the return walk, buses & a little taxi train (in the Summer months) will return you to your starting point.
The Playa de Arenal is located in the centre of Javea Bay, it undoubtedly the most famous & popular beach among sunbathers with its large sandy beach which has undergone major growth in recent years. Parallel to the promenade there is a wide variety of cafes & restaurants for quality food & leisurely drinks.
In the summer there is a local craft fair every evening situated along the promenade of The Arenal where you can find an array of hand crafted jewellery, leather goods, clothing, ceramics, candles & local artists displaying their works of art, perfect for "take home" gifts!
Further around the coast you will find the quaint pebbled beach of Granadella which has a selection of restaurants where you can sample traditional Spanish dishes.
Many of the beaches in Javea have been awarded the "blue flag" for being particularly clean and well maintained.
Market day in Javea is Thursday & is held in the Old Town here you can buy all your fresh produce & pick up a bargain or two.
There are several Golf courses nearby: Javea's 9 hole golf course is the nearest (15min drive), & has restaurant facilities. Moraira's Ifach 9 hole course is compact & challenging. La Sella 27 hole course which hosts many international events is adjacent to the Marriott Hotel complete with Spa & 30mins away at Oliva where an 18 hole course is available.
Throughout the year Javea celebrates many Fiestas all include colourful processions, dancing, bull running & fantastic firework displays. The most spectacular & colourful is the Moors & Christians fiesta & parades held in July. Below is a list of some of the Fiestas throughout the year.
April 24th to May 3rd 2013 Fiesta in honour of Jesus Nazareno.
