The Tuscany region

The house is at the heart of Southern Tuscany and is an excellent launching pad for the many places to visit in this rich part of Italy. There are churches, monasteries, picture postcard villages, and historic towns in abundance within an hour's drive. These include Cortona, Arezzo, Florence, Perugia, Orvieto, Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Gimignano,Castiglion Fiorentino and Assisi amongst many others.

Cortona area

Charming Cortona nestling on its hill, has much to offer the visitor. Meander the medieval streets, sit and watch the world go by at an open air bar then lunch or dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants. Cortona has a fascinating Etruscan Museum, an Archaeological Park & continues excavating sites. The Archdiocese Museum contains paintings by Luca Signorelli, Beato Angelico & others, but the masterpiece is Beato Angelico’s painting of ‘The Annunciation’. In the summer Cortona hosts various cultural events including 'The Tuscan Sun Festival'. Arezzo is famed for its goldsmiths & its Antiques Fair held on the first Sunday of the month & the preceding Saturday. See Piero della Francesca’s restored ‘Legend of the True Cross' in the Basilica of San Francesco.

With a short & pleasant drive to Montepulciano, famed for its ‘Vino Nobile’. Visit the famous wine cantinas, then relax with a coffee & delicious cake in the Art Nouveau Café Poliziano. From Montepulciano continue on this scenic road & visit Pienza, famed for its Pecorino cheese. Enjoy its quiet pretty streets & admire the outstanding views over the Val D’Orcia. Continue to Montalcino, the second richest locality in the province of Siena, due principally to the revival and marketing of its wines. Notably the Brunello, reckoned by many the finest in Italy. Tuscany is without doubt the most important wine producing area in Italy whilst the Umbrian producers have made great strides to compete in terms of quality & variety. Follow a planned ‘Wine Route’ & visit some of the famous vineyards.

Lake Trasimeno, where Hannibal defeated the Romans in 217 BC, is just 15 minutes away. Visit Passignano and Castiglione del Lago and take a boat ride to one of the lakes islands. Paciano, just to the south, was voted one of the eight most beautiful villages in Italy and after wandering its quiet streets a lunch at ‘La Loggetta’ is recommended. Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis, attracts large numbers of visitors year-round. The Basilica di San Francesco houses the Saint’s tomb and frescoes by Giotto and Lorenzetti. Travel a little further and visit the pretty hill top towns of Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco and Spoleto. Nearby Deruta is rightfully famous for its uniquely designed ceramics. While the ladies meander round one of the many local markets the men might fancy a round of golf. Val di Chiana & Perugia Golf courses are respectively 30 minutes & 45 minutes drive by car. Maybe now its time to just simply relax and enjoy Apartment sellari, with a cool drink and a good book!
