Cortona area
CORTONA is Magnificently situated, with olives and vineyards creeping up to its walls, one of Tuscany’s prettiest villages and also being one of the most well know, thanks to the book ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’.
From the valley floor a 5km road winds up to the hill top town, which commands sweeping views over Lago Trasimeno and the plain of Valdichiana. Cortona is one of the oldest cities in Tuscany. Founded by the Etruscans whose works can still be seen in the foundations of the town’s massive stone walls.
The city was a major seat of power during the medieval period, able to hold its own against larger towns such as Siena and Arezzo.
TIPS Cortona is very steep, so avoid the hottest hours of the day.
Sunday afternoon gets very busy with Italian visitors.
The heart of Cortona is at Piazza della Repubblica, from here you will find many good restaurant.
