The Tuscany / Arezzo Province region

The house is situated near the charming little village of Montanare in southern Tuscany. This romantic and tranquil family home is the ideal base to explore the historic hill towns of Tuscany and Umbria. Other attractions include the Palio in Siena and the Giostra del Saraceno (jousting) in Arezzo. Perugia, Assisi, Siena, Montepulciano, Piensa, Citta di Castello amongst others are all within easy access. There is sailing on Lake Trasimeno, twenty minutes away.
Casa Il Campo is a five minute walk from the village of Montanare, which has a bar/convenience store, a post office and a lovely Tuscan Trattoria (Il Molino). The village of Pergo, five minutes by car has a good Pizzaria, a well-stoked supermarket (Mario, the owner, is a first rate butcher) and a nice Cafe. For bigger shops we recommend the Co-op in Camuccia.
The Cortona area
The nearest town to Casa Il Campo is the Etruscan hill town of Cortona. Besides beautiful churches and the Celle (the retreat) of San Francis of Assissi, Cortona's Museo Diocesano and Museo Etrusco are world renowned. Cortona hosts the Tuscan Sun Festival (classical music - first two weeks in August). The Cortona Antiques' Fair is one of the most important in Italy (September).
The historic centre of Cortona has been pedestrianized. Along the Via Nazionale you will find a number of lovely stores, ranging from the local pottery maker, two antiques' dealers, a butcher, a greengrocer to Barchelli's, a lovely cafe. Do not miss the central square and adjoining Piazza Signorelli.
Cortona is known throughout Italy for its food, particularly its beef. For a small town it has a remarkable number of excellent restaurants ranging from simple pizzaria (la Grotta, la Logetta) to very elegant (Tonino's, Osteria del Teatro).

We cannot praise this villa, its staff and its owner enough. A group of 7 of us stayed in early September 2011. The villa exceeded all of our expectations - the pictures are good but dont give it the justice it deserved! The staff were very friendly on arrival and explained eveything to us. Franca who came to tned the pool and gardens each day was lovely, and we got to know her as the week went on. We even arranged for Franca to bake a wonderful cake for our friend who turned 30 whilst we were there. The villa was inundated with space and we had more than enough to do around the house; day trips fell by the way side as we enjoyed the villa, the pool, its grounds and its extensive kitchen to whip up goodies everyday! I cant begin to touch on the fact the house came with everything - from a massive fridge to store all your food (read; wine!) and the huge cupboard of pool goodies and toys! I cannot recomend it enough - book this place, put your feet up and enjoy! |

"How Lucky Can You Get!!"
We picked Casa del Campo from the internet after struggling to get the perfect spot. We got it. The house, grounds, and pool are beautiful, created for the Tuscan Hills
We, four couples, were totally comfortable with every aspect of the villa.
The kitchen, dining room, indoor and outdoor eating and sitting areas fit us beautifully, and yet each couple had room to be on its own.
The fig tree was overflowing, and grapes, apples pears and persimmon accompanied our walks around the grounds, and an afternoon swim hit the spot.
We had easy access to surrounding areas and quick connections with the autostrada and superstrada to get where we wanted.
The local support crew was helpful, and arranging for the rental was easy and reassuring.
Trust me, you'll love it.

We have just returned from a sublime holiday in Italy, having arrived first into Rome before venturing north to Casa Al Campo. Upon arrival you are immediately hit by the tranquility and privacy of the gardens and surrounding area, there being few neighbours around or visible.
The accommodation itself is a grand, proud, sturdy old farmhouse, restored to a high level with many original features. It is also a very personnal place. Unlike many holiday lets, where any old piece of furniture has been used, Casa Al Campo has clearly been furnished and decorated to suit the comfort of the owners as much as their guests. It is well stocked and the kitchen functional with pots, pans glasses and knives etc. that you actually need rather than items that have simply been put there to tick a box.
The outside space is stunning. Our children would (it seemed at times) disappear for hours, running around the grounds, their imaginations running wild. There was never any concern over safety, the garden having a sturdy hedge around the main parts and the nearest road being very quiet. Quite often they would return, arms laiden with fruit picked from the variety of fruit trees, which we would then help them turn into delicious puddings.
The pool area is large and functional, again with garden/pool furniture that is comfortable and of a higher standard than you get at many hotels. From here, as from any part of the garden, you can survey the surrounding countryside, the hills/mountains changing aspect and colour almost by the hour as the sun moves across and casts new and different shadows over their surface.
Montanare itself is a very quiet affair. There is a good restaurant owned by a couple who also run the regions only Michellin starred restaurant and hotel, so the food is good albeit perhaps with prices a few points higher than they should be, offset by the fact that you can walk to and from and so can enjoy some fabulous wines including some very reasonably priced offerings made by the owner.
Cortona, a few minutes drive away is stunning. You will be left breathless by the view, if not by the steepness of some of the streets and alleyways! A little further afield, but all less than an hours drive are Lake Trasimeno and it's surrounding towns such as Castiglione del Lago and Perugia, Montelpulciano, Assisi, Siena and Florence. We left via Pisa and Lucca, a drive of just over two hours.
I would not hesitate to return to this stunning property.

We have had two wonderful family holidays at Casa Il Campo. We found it very difficult to get the children away from the pool and garden. A.Livsey
Casa Il Campo was an ideal base for sightseeing in southern Tuscany and Umbria. It was a joy to return home to this lovely house after a day walking around the nearby hilltowns. A. Walker,May 2010
I think my family and I all agree that the "farmhouse" was the most relaxing and enjoyable place we stayed in Italy. It is far enough in the country without being hard to get to, or for making various day trip destinations. We enjoyed trips to Cortona, Montepulciano, Orvieto.. Sitting out under the pergola was very peaceful and relaxing. We also very much enjoyed the pool. The sitting areas in the house were also very comfortable and cozy. With the quiet, and the spacious accommodations, we also had the best sleep of the entire trip.W. Howell,June 2010
