The Tuscany region
The region has a wealth of places to visit and "I Girasoli" is the ideal base from which to explore the many centres of art and history in both Tuscany and Umbria. Only fifteen minutes from Lake Trasimeno and five minutes from the centre of the medieval hilltop town of Cortona. Siena, Assisi, Perugia, Montepulciano, Pienza, Orvieto, Florence, Rome (the list is endless) are all easily accessible using the motorway and train system.
Cortona area
Cortona is a beautiful medieval hilltop town with narrow streets, reached by a road lined with olive groves. Founded by the Etruscans, Cortona is full of history and art. There is a museum in the town centre and there are festivals throughout the Summer. The "Sagra della Bistecca", held in mid August, is a must. This takes places in the park in the centre of Cortona where hundreds of people visit over a weekend in order to enjoy a huge barbecue. Other festivals in this and surrounding areas take place frequently. The Signorelli Theatre has operas and other events organised.
How to get there
One hour from Florence airport and two hours from Rome and Pisa airports. Perugia airport 40 minute drive. Ryanair and Easyjet offer low cost flights.
