The Tuscany region
Tuscany is about living the dream - the hot summer days, the vineyards, the cycle lanes across the valley that follow the canals to Arezzo, the cooking schools, the horse treks, the local markets, the historic monuments and remnants of past civilisations to explore. For those who love nature and walking there are a number of marked walks in the hills and around the wider area of Cortona.
An ideal holiday location for friends, families and the experienced travellers
You can spend your day by the pool soaking up the suns energy and recharging your batteries or you can explore the historic hill top City of Cortona with its Etruscan, Roman and Middle-Age architecture, Etruscan Tombs, Museums, Medici Fort, Cathedral and Churches. Not to mention the great bars and cafes that you can visit and sit at the outside tables to watch the world go by.
Cortona also hosts a large number of artist galleries, antique shops and festivals.
- The art galleries are full of treasures from sculpture, jewellery, oil paintings, water colours and Marquetry. Antique shops provide wonderful cool places to explore these treasures.
- The festivals are varied - from the snail festival, the mushroom festival to the pageantry of the Il Palio in Sienna and Cortona's own medieval celebration complete with crossbow competitions.
- You can go further afield to wander the vineyards in the valley or follow the trail that outlines the area that Hannibal fought his famous battle with Flaminius on the shores of nearby Lake Trasimeno.
Other hill top towns beckon with Montepulicano (approx. 30min) and Montelcino (approx. 40min) with its famous Brunello wines. Sienna (approx. 40min) is close enough to go and enjoy lunch in the Piazza and stroll the streets in the late afternoon. Assisi (approx. 45min) is also nearby for those who wish to explore the wonderful Giotto murals in the church of St Francis of Assisi.
Florence is an easy one hour away by train or car to see its famous resident- Davide - at the Galleria dell'Accademia and of course the myriad of art in the Uffizi is not to be missed. Rome is also easily reached though we do suggest catching the train ( 2 hours) as driving in this city is rather a challenge.
Food and wine are at the heart of Tuscany and you are treated to a sumptuous array markets, local stores, restaurants and bars in Cortona and in the villages that surround this beautiful world. The food is fresh and tasty, the wines delectable. From the corner bar, the causal and comforting Enoteca, to the more formal and luxurious restaurants - Tuscany has everything. You just need to choose.
Cortona is well serviced to make any holiday easy and enjoyable.
At Villa Rosa we provide a welcome pack with ideas of things to do and there is also an information centre in the heart of Cortona that will help pack your holiday with activities from cooking classes to wine tasting to golf courses. English is widely spoken as Cortona has been aligned with The University of Georgia (USA) for summer school for over 30 years which has bought many English speakers to the town. Cortona is also the mecca for all those who love Frances Mayes and her 'Under the Tuscan Sun' book and film. The locals are welcoming and generous in their hospitality.
There are 5 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive, over 30 excellent restaurants in the City of Cortona which are well frequented by both visitor and locals. The shopping is vast - there are 3 excellent outlet villages within an hour's drive. The Arrezzo Antique market held over the weekend of the first Sunday of the month (except August) is the largest outdoor antique market in Europe. Hand-painted pottery from Deruta is about 40 minutes by car.
There are several beaches on Lake Trasimeno about 20 minutes away and there are ferries going out to the islands in the lake. Sailing is also available on the lake.
For those of you who need exercise and love walking, there are marked trials for walks in the hills surrounding Villa Rosa. Two public tennis courts are located at the end of the road and of course a stroll into the City of Cortona is also to be claimed as exercise!
There are also two golf courses nearby that are well equipped and you can hire golf clubs.

This place turned out to be perfect for me and my wife. It was well located just outside Cortona but a short walking distance to a local cafe and restaurant. It is very private and on a beautiful property with gorgeous views. It has a small parking space. We rented a car and used the house as a base from which to explore towns in Umbria and nearby. The house is well outfitted. It's small but perfect for two people. The grounds are beautiful and there is a very nice pool.
Location is important when you want to be near amenities but far enough away to enjoy the private and tranquil aspects of Tuscany. Thank you for your kind review and I hope we welcome you back soon.

"A slice of heaven"
This is the most relaxing place I have ever been. I could look out at the view for days. Cortona is a wonderful town with some lovely eateries and cafes to watch the world go by. Make sure to take a stroll along the passegiata of an evening. Just perfect.

"Gorgeous villa in a beautiful location"
The villa is immaculately presented and benefits from fantastic views and extensive grounds. It was March when I was here so it was a little on the colder side, so although couldn't use the pool (which looked lovely), did benefit from the central heating and the lovely open fires. The walk into the village is also very pleasant, would thoroughly recommend a visit here.

"This is what an Italian holiday should be like!!"
My husband and I stayed in Villa Rosa with our 10 month old daughter. It was truly the most wonderful holiday we have had. Relaxing by the pool most days and wandering into town if needed. Cortona is a magical town, and close enough to other historical cities. If you wish to take in the likes of Siena,Perugia or Florence you can easily do this as a day trip. A must for all, that wish to live the 'under the Tuscon sun' dream!!!!

We loved our stay at Villa Rosa. After travelling for several weeks around France and Italy, staying at Villa Rosa in Cortona felt like heaven. The views from the villa are breathtakingly beautiful. So elevated, we felt like eagles perched above the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The house is gorgeous and very well appointed. Two large bedrooms, a designer kitchen and living spaces, and great indoor/ outdoor flow to both the north and south patios and terraced lawns. The swimming pool is divine! (especially in 35 degrees summer heat!). Very deep and cool, it looks over the valley and offers beautiful views for miles. The villa is close to town and there are so many lovely walks and sights in this beautiful part of Italy. We will be back!

Had a one week stay at Villa Rosa and fell in love with the house, the gardens and Cortona. This really is a peice of Italian paradise - the house is beautifully appointed...spacious, modern but still a taste of Italian living. IT was the best 7 days :0)

"Living the Dolce Vida"
Perfect Getaway, all you need if you want to self-cater and experience true Tuscan village life. You can walk into the village for a coffee in the morning and a pre-dinner drink at night or get up early and drive to Sienna, Florence or other easily accessible Tuscan villages. There is so much to see here if you want to really explore Tuscany. The restaurants in Cortona itself are fabulous and varied and you are spoiled for choice with the selection of very fresh provisions in the village’s various food shops. There is also a fair every Saturday morning, which is a must see. The life and the people within a small Tuscan hilltown is an experience in itself. We usually fly first class – so we are fussy with our accommodation. Villa Rosa is clean, well equipped, has a fabulous view, provides peace and privacy, good linens, excellent kitchen facilities, outdoor el fresco eating areas, outdoor furniture etc. We will be back
