La Lombarda, our beautifully restored traditional 18th century Tuscan farmhouse is ideally placed within easy reach of Tuscany and Umbria's wealth of art and cultural centres. Cortona, nestling in its hillside just 20 minutes away, with its medieval cobbled lanes is a delightful and atmospheric town. Siena, Montepulciano, Pienza, Perugia and Assisi are all within a hours scenic drive.

The farmhouse is set in a rural landscape and is an oasis to which to return to after a days sightseeing. Relax by the pool and soak up the sun or sit under the jasmine covered pergola with a good book and a glass of local wine taking in the view of rolling countryside.

Il Bocciolo, The Rosebud, is a spacious and comfortable apartment that dates from the late 1700's and was originally a stable.

The lounge area has two large sofas one of which converts to a 5' double bed, TV, DVD and some books for your enjoyment. Through the original brick arch, where the cows would stand and rub their backs, is the well equipped kitchen with its old wooden beams. Open and airy there is a dining table and chairs, a fridge/freezer, oven and hob and a washing machine. A door in the lounge opens to a small inner hall, the shower room and the romantic twin/double bedroom with its pretty view of Cortona nestling in its hillside. From the lounge french doors open onto your own private patio. Enjoy your breakfast under the morning sun and then linger at the end of the day with a glass of wine under starlit skies.

The Tuscany region

Tuscany and Umbria, a land of changing hues soaking in brillant light, stunningly beautiful and green, land of rolling hills, undulating valleys, rows of cypress, olive groves, blood-red poppies, glorious sunflowers, succulent-grape-full vineyards and picturesque mountains, unexpectedly, gently changing scenery, perfect for walking and cycling. The worlds's richest region for its mediaeval and renaissance art and architecture, Roman and Etruscan sites and museums. Renown for its charming, atmospheric and, sometimes, intriguing hill towns where the unsuspecting traveller may relax over the finest food and wine.

Cortona

From its lofty perch, picturesque and historic Cortona an Etruscan town founded around 700b.c., much of the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno may be surveyed: the mountains of Cetona and Amiata, and the town of Montepulciano to the south.

Cortona's excellent Etruscan museum houses fascinating and priceless relics including the 4th century B.C. 'Etruscan Chandelier'. The Diocese Museum has many works of significant artistic value, the masterpiece being Fra Angelico's 'Annuciation'.

Hidden in a cleft of Monte Sant' Egidio lies 'Le Celle' founded by Saint Francis in 1211. This peaceful, spiritual place is where the saint spent some time and where you can still see his cell. The monks here continue living their lives according to his teachings.

Stroll Cortona's medieval cobbled streets. Down from the Diocesan Museum is the characteristic Via del Gesù, dating 1300 - 1500 and still perfectly preserved. Sit and rest a while at a bar in Piazza del Repubblica and watch the world go by sipping a cappuccino or a glass of prosecco. Choose from one of Cortona's large selection of excellent restaurants serving simple local dishes to the gourmet, accompanied by local wines justly famous for their quality. Cortona has its own DOC and has in recent years gained an excellent reputation for its Syrah (Shiraz) wines, as well as for the ubiquitous Sangiovese.

In mid May Cortona stages the 'Archidado' games to commemorate the marriage in 1397 between Francesco Casali and the noblewoman Antonia Salimbeni. The crossbow skill challenge, marriage re-enactment and pageant take place in Piazza Signorelli.

Summertime is the season of classical, chamber and jazz concerts throughout Tuscany and Umbria. The traveller is spoiled for choice of entertainment with most villages holding festas and concerts.

'Ferragosto',15th August, at the peak of the Italian summer season, coinciding with the Feast of the Assumption, is celebrated in the Giardini del Parterre in Cortona with the 'Sagra della Bistecca' (T bone steaks cooked on 14 metre wide barbeques), and the following weekend, at the same location, the locals and visitors celebrate again with the 'Sagra del Porcino' (Porcini Mushroom festival).

Of course, Cortona is not the only attraction in the Valdichiana. The hill town of Montepulciano is quite close and is rightly famous for its architecture, views and, naturally, for its Sangiovese based wines, especially the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

Also, not to be over-looked is Lake Trasimeno, Italy's 4th largest, and where Hannibal defeated the Romans in 217 b.c. The area surrounding its shores provides nature trails, pony trekking, historic trails, boating, fishing, sailing. There are ferry services from the lakeside resorts to the tranquil islands of Maggiore and Polvese. A feature of the lands around the lake, and not be ignored, are the many and delicious individualistic wines to be found there. The lake provides a marvellous micro-climate, which together with the unique terrain, makes the area eminently suitable for the production of wine that is pleasantly distinct from its Tuscan neighbours.

A little further afield, but close enough, are the towns of Siena, Florence, Pienza, Perugia, Orvieto, Fiesole and Assisi, each of which would need a book to describe their attractions, but maybe it is sufficient to bring to the attention of the discerning traveller that each of them has its own unique history and beauty straining to be discovered. Take a scenic drive and discover the many hidden gems that this area has to offer.

"Great base for discovering Tuscany."

Peter and Nina's apartments are in an ideal situation for exploring Tuscany with the added bonus of a pool to relax by when you return from trips to the surrounding hilltop villages.

Il Boccolio is spacious and comfortable and we had the best nights sleep in a long while. The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen and there is also a private patio area with a table and chairs for outside dining and relaxing.

Peter and Nina are excellent hosts and made us very welcome as well as providing lots of information on the area and restaurant recommendations.

This was our second visit and we are looking forward to returning in the future.
