House | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, Borgo di Vagli is a quaint, meticulously restored 14th century Hamlet surrounded by a protected area of olive groves, fruit trees and ancient oaks. From the terraces, you can enjoy panoramic views of the breathtaking Tuscan hills, including a spectacular view of the 10th century Pierle castle.
Borgo di Vagli is the result of a ten-year restoration project conceived and executed by renowned restoration engineer Fulvio Di Rosa, Fulvio's efforts have allowed Borgo di Vagli to maintain much of its original feel, atmosphere, and charm, without compromising modern day comforts. Borgo di Vagli is not for everyone. It is for those who enjoy the charm of ducking under 600 years old low doorways, catching scenic views through small windows cut through thick stone walls, and dining in a traditional candlelit Trattoria.

The Tuscany region
Picture charming vineyards, gently rolling hillsides, lush cypress trees, winding sandy roads leading to farmhouses and moss-coated castles… Now, picture precious works of art, ancient, awe-inspiring architecture, delectable food and wine, charming cafés, spectacular recreational opportunities, centuries of history and colourful outdoor markets. That’s Tuscany.
We’re enchanted by Tuscany because, as a region, it encompasses both the tiniest hamlet and Italy’s centre of culture — Florence. In Tuscany, you’ll find calm tranquillity and a boisterous vibe. Romance and relaxation. Whatever you imagine, you can discover.
Borgo di Vagli offers the perfect vantage point from which to explore all of Tuscany and the best places of interest in Umbria. The resort is just 20 minutes from the popular unspoiled, medieval town of Cortona and within easy driving distance of Siena, San Gimignano and Florence.
You can easily explore the walled town and vineyards of Montepulciano and Montalcino, enjoy the famed "percorino" cheeses of Pienza and chocolates from Perugia, discover the Etruscan treasures and arts in Chiusi and other less well know but must-visit places such as — Arezzo, Assisi, Montone, Lucignano, Spoleto, Spello and Gubbio.
Just 20-minutes from Borgo di Vagli is Lake Trasimeno, made famous for a battle between Hannibal and the Romans in 217 BC.
Enjoy the natural beauty of the Protected Area surrounding the Hamlet by exploring eight private circular walking and hiking paths, which vary in difficulty and distance. Just a short, scenic drive from Borgo di Vagli you will find Lake Trasimeno as well as two golf courses. Your concierge is happy to arrange your tee times as well as massage appointments and horseback riding excursions.
Swimming Pool and Private Terraces
An inviting 66-foot (20-meter), outdoor swimming pool graces the Hamlet's top terrace, providing the perfect place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Escape to over 15 terraces that outlay the hillside. The numerous terraces are ideal for a relaxing afternoon with a good book, a nap in the sun, or a quiet conversation over a glass of locally produced wine.
Trattoria "I' cche c'è c'è" (whatever there is)
Housed at the base of the 14th century guard tower, the Hamlet's Trattoria is lit solely by candles. Here, lovers of Tuscany from around the world gather to share tales of their daily explorations and passion for Italian living over a freshly prepared traditional Tuscan meal paired with famous regional wines.
Culture, Arts, History and Cuisine
The Hamlet's office will book tickets for museums, concerts and festivals such as the world renowned Cortona Tuscan Sun Festival, Spoleto's "Due mondi" Arts Festival and the Umbria Jazz Festival. They can also offer you secretive tips on local attractions and festas, as well as assisting you in arranging wine tours, directing you to local markets and fulfilling any special requests you may have.

"One of those experiences your memory plays over and over again, every time putting a smile on your face."
We spent the second week of a two week vacation in Tuscany at Borgo di Vagli. This was our 'down time' week, having done a lot of sightseeing from our previous base in Lucca. And the property was exactly as we hoped.
Wonderful attention has been paid to detail in the renovation of these properties, getting just the right balance between traditional and comfortable. The houses and grounds are impeccably maintained by an excellent staff for whom nothing is too much trouble (even down to hunting in the gravel for a lost earring!). The receptionists were friendly and welcoming, providing the kind of personal service you simply never get from hotel staff.q
We spent our days wallowing in relaxation with just two outings :Lake Trasimene and Cortona, and Montepulciano and Pienza.
While we loved our time in the Borgo, it is not the ideal base for anyone lookng to explore widely. The 2k of 'white road' and the relatively slow routes to Cortona and beyond makes you ask the question 'is my journey really necessary?' For us this was merely an added incentive to be blissfully lazy, but it is worth considering for anyone planning to indulge in serious sightseeing. But then, what better sights than lizards basking in the sun, butterflies pottering between lavender bushes and the Pierle Castle rising out of the trees?and all these can be enjoyed from under a shady wisteria with a glass in one hand Nd a book in the other.

"Borgo di Vagli is a truly lovely location for spending time in central Italy."
Based on what others have written about the road leading up to the Borgo and the potential "bug" issues we were somewhat prepared.
However, the white road was less than worrisome and actually quite fun to drive. The bees were lovely as they filled the lavender with life and sound. Both the lavender and rosemary bushes were fantastic. I have never seen rosemary in abundance as it is at the Borgo. The mosquitoes were infrequent and most windows have screens. The wasps pesky but manageable. We looked forward to spotting fox. We had one wild boar spotting early one morning and an entire family spotting a dusk! We are like kids in a candy store when we spotted either animal.
We were 4 people for 1 week and 6 people for the second week in two apartments so it was nice to share the experience, the wine and food with friends and family.
Our apartment was lovely, simple, comfortable and well equipped. Our views
were into the stunning valley below and toward the castle. The smells were amazing and unforgettable. The office staff was lovely and so very accommodating. These ladies were always available to answer questions or assist us. There were mid week cleaning staff that we never saw. It was a nice surprise to come home to a cleaned apartment. Thank you for that.
The grounds staff quietly maintained the pool, gardens and olive trees. As much as we could we sat in the gardens with our early evening appetizers and aperitivi before preparing our dinners. We enjoyed cooking as we were shopping for some of the best and freshest ingredients of the day. Paremsan and olive oil just never tasted so good! However, we had a couple of amazing Borgo pizza nights which are unforgettable.
The pool was perfect both in the morning before we started our days and at the end of a hot day. Since we were at the bottom of the property it became a well earned splash into the pool which is on the top of the property.
Our after dinner activity became friendly & slightly competitive bocci games.
It is a lovely and peaceful place to go home to every day. Travelling at times can be arduous and ending a day in a hotel room anticlimactic. Ending our days at the Borgo was a treat and a joy. We enjoyed returning at the end of every day we were out and reinvigorating ourselves in the pool.
Driving out on the white road at the end of our stay was sad but I know we will be back for another visit.
Borgo di Vagli is a truly lovely location for spending time in central Italy.
