The Limousin/Auvergne region

The rolling countryside of the Limousin lies at the very heart of France, on the western flanks of the great Massif Central land mass.

Sharing borders with mighty Burgundy, the majestic Loire region and the dramatic Auvergne, it is itself immersed in history. Strolling through the sleepy villages, there's a feeling that the modern age has passed by - so much so, that this rural region has earned a reputation as the 'Secret France'.

Rising on the vast granite Plateau de Millevaches in the east, the Creuse, Vienne and Vezere rivers descend to the south, west and north, through lush landscapes of forest and lake, offering ample opportunities for outdoor pursuits.

At the centre of the region lies the Limousin Regional Park and the historic capital, Limoges, renowned for its porcelain. Downstream, on the Vienne, St Junien has specialised in glove-making since the Middle Ages and in the nearby Monts de Blond, the pretty village of Mortemart is worth a visit. This area was a hotbed of Resistance activity during the last war and at Oradour-sur-Glane, ruins still stand as testimony to the village's inhabitants, who were burned alive by the Nazis.

To the south of Limoges, in the Correze, turreted Uzerche stands guard over the Vezere River before it plummets through the Saillant Gorges. Near Tulle, at Gimel-les-Cascades, the highest waterfalls in the Limousin plunge more than 150 metres into the Inferno. At the southern limit of the region, on a bend in the Dordogne River, lies lovely Beaulieu with its many fine houses. Nearby are the medieval towns of Turenne and Collognes-la-Rouge, the latter famous for the colour of its architecture.

In the rolling, wooded landscape of the Creuse, north-east of Limoges, the town of Aubusson has been using the pure waters of the River Creuse to dye tapestry yarns for centuries. Its workshops, open to the public, remain a hive of activity today. Downstream, the river is spanned by a lovely old bridge at the village of Moutier d'Ahun, dominated by its beautiful church which stands on the site of a former abbey.

Correze Village

Canoes and kayaks are available in Gluges (22km) and Beaulieu-sur Dordogne (29km)

Horse riding is possible at Chauffour (12km) and La Chapelle-aux-Brocs (17Km)

Swimming and pedaloes are available at Lac du Causse (16km)

There are tennis courts in Meyssac (10km).

Fishing is possible in the Etang de Turenne at the bottom of the village. The stunning village of Collonges-la-Rouge (8km) is built entirely of redsandstone. The clifftop village of Rocamadour(33km), the extraordinary Gouffre de Padirac (19Km) and the prehistoric park at Lacave (33km) are all worth visiting.

"Delightful Cottage, peaceful, excellent views"

Stayed in this charming cottage at the end of June 2012. Positioned near the top of the village just below the walls of the medieval chateau, it has remarkable views.
The cottage was spotlessly clean and well equipped. TV reception not good while we were there.
The village below is very attractive . Two good restaurants. The walk back to the cottage is rather steep.

"On top of the world (almost!)"

For anyone who enjoys rural France and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Turenne provides both magnificently, while Plumeauvent adds icing to the cake. We have returned to the cottage two years running and never tire of its magnificent position, perched high on one of the outer curtain wall of the village's ruined hilltop chateau. It is extremely well equiped and comfortable, and provides a fantastic base for walking, enjoying wildlife and visiting attractions over a wide area.

"A special location with an amazing view"

The location of this property is rather special and photogenic, being at the top of the castle hill, outside the walls of the chateau. Although full of visitors wheezing their way up the hill in the day time, we felt we had the whole peak to ourselves before 10am and after 7pm, with glorious views to the south/south east. It was so peaceful and tranquil. With easy parking and a multitude of interesting things to see within just a short drive, we had a delightful week. Self-catering was easy thanks to a convenient supermarket. For peace and quiet, away from Wi-fi and even 3G signals, this was a great.
