The Limousin / Auvergne / Correze region

Turenne is right at the very southern most tip of the Limousin and is more relevant to the far more popular tourist areas of the Dordogne valley. They offer an unrivalled combination of ancient civilisation (like the world famous Lascaux caves and prehistoric paintings) and medieval history. It was here that the Hundred Years War was fought in the Middle Ages and there are spectacular castles and fortified towns perfectly preserved to bring that to life. There's an incredible array of places to see but the countryside itself is a just as big an attraction. There's an immense variety of terrain within just a few miles, from stark rocky landscape to endless thickly wooded hills with twisty roads which are a delight to drive. The climate ranges from cold, crisp and beautiful in the winter to a very early warm spring and a summer which lasts and lasts with spells which can reach into the 40s but are normally in the 30s. The season is beginning to stretch further into the autumn which is still warm and a perfect time to visit.
The Correze Village / Turenne area
Turenne itself is a major attraction but it's within easy reach of the must-see town of Sarlat, a medieval time warp, and one of France's most popular sights, the spectacular cliff top shrine at Rocamadour. There are more of the officially listed 'most beautiful villages in France' in this area than any other, such as Carennac, Collonges La Rouge, and Curemonte. Every small town and village has weekly markets in an area world renowned for its food, like foie gras and duck. The problem is not in finding enough things to see and do but finding enough time to be able to. The countryside itself provides most of the activities; it's a paradise for cyclists, walkers (and if you're feeling lazy, drivers), there are horses to hire and the Dordogne has to be canoed with rental canoes available all along the river (with buses to return you to your start point. . .). There's a superb water park at Betaille half an hour away.

We rented L'Auditoire for 1 week and it was terrific in every way. We loved the accommodation, the village, and the surrounding area. I don't think we would have changed anything. The service was great and we'd certainly consider going back if the opportunity arises. |

We stayed in L'Auditoire for one week on May 2011. My husband and I travelled with our one year old daughter. The driving instructions we were provided with were a little intimidatining but we found the house with no problems. We were very pleased with the vacation rental. The house was clean and well maintained. It was well equipped and had everything we needed. The Village of Turenne is very pretty and quaint. We were a little disappointed with the availability of restuarants and cafes in the village. We ate in both of the restaurants on alternate nights but were a little confused as to when they would open and which day each was open on. They never seemed to be open at the same time and when they were open it was a very late opening. This was not suitable for our daughter and we ended up eating in most nights. Also, there is a creperie in the village which only opened on the last day of our stay. We were not able to have lunch at all in the village as the two restaurants only opened for dinner. There is a pub at the end of the road, however, he does not serve any food, only alcohol. We were told that there are more options during the peak tourist times. We also read that the road leading up to the cottage was very long and steep especially when pushing a stroller. This is true. That hill exhausted us. Good thing there was always a nice glass of wine as a reward when we got to the top. The owner, Penny, was very helpful and called to check in on us a few times. We also paid close attention to her restaurant reviews found in her information binder. We found her recommendations to be accurate and very much enjoyed the restaurants she recommended. We also rented some baby equipment from a French company. When the pick up did not go as planned, Penny was very helpful in coordinating the return of our package for us as we had returned home. The views from Turenne as spectacular, make sure you climb the tower to take it all in. |

3 couples (family members) stayed together in L'Auditoire. The town of Turenne is so picturesque it is almost hard to believe it is real. The gite is located at the top of the small town overlookiing the surrounding valley and hillsides. The gite has been beautifully decorated and has all the modern comforts whilst retaining a beautiful and authentic charm. The town of Turenne is situated in an area that allowed us easy access to many of the sites in the region - one week was not nearly long enough to see it all. |
Guestbook for L'Auditoire
Add our names to the long list of those nourished in mind and spirit while staying at this magical house and village. John B, Vermont, USA
The charm of the house was balanced by the modern conveniences of the kitchen and bathrooms . Everything needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable was there. Bill & Joyce B, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
We called this our fairytale house. The location is breathtaking - atop a perfectly preserved medieval village, across from a 17th century chapel and below the remnants of a mighty chateau. Virginia S, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ,USA
Driving toward Turenne was magical. There it was was rising from the clouds. We just couldn't believe our luck to have chosen this place. We wound our way up narrow streets to the house which was more than we expected, beautiful and French. Trudy and John F, Auckland, New Zealand
