Home description

L'Auditoire is a three-storey stone mansion from the 15th century, a superb combination of ancient history and modern luxury coupled with tasteful French style. It's located right at the summit of a village unique in France, once so powerful it ruled for miles and coined its own money. Now it's a traffic free oasis of calm with a spectacular view for miles.

Not only is Turenne itself a major attraction but the house provides the perfect base for experiencing one of France's most popular tourist areas.

The Limousin / Auvergne / Correze region

Turenne is right at the very southern most tip of the Limousin and is more relevant to the far more popular tourist areas of the Dordogne valley. They offer an unrivalled combination of ancient civilisation (like the world famous Lascaux caves and prehistoric paintings) and medieval history. It was here that the Hundred Years War was fought in the Middle Ages and there are spectacular castles and fortified towns perfectly preserved to bring that to life. There's an incredible array of places to see but the countryside itself is a just as big an attraction. There's an immense variety of terrain within just a few miles, from stark rocky landscape to endless thickly wooded hills with twisty roads which are a delight to drive. The climate ranges from cold, crisp and beautiful in the winter to a very early warm spring and a summer which lasts and lasts with spells which can reach into the 40s but are normally in the 30s. The season is beginning to stretch further into the autumn which is still warm and a perfect time to visit.

Correze Village / Turenne area

Turenne itself is a major attraction but it's within easy reach of the must-see town of Sarlat, a medieval time warp, and one of France's most popular sights, the spectacular cliff top shrine at Rocamadour. There are more of the officially listed 'most beautiful villages in France' in this area than any other, such as Carennac, Collonges La Rouge, and Curemonte. Every small town and village has weekly markets in an area world renowned for its food, like foie gras and duck. The problem is not in finding enough things to see and do but finding enough time to be able to. The countryside itself provides most of the activities; it's a paradise for cyclists, walkers (and if you're feeling lazy, drivers), there are horses to hire and the Dordogne has to be canoed with rental canoes available all along the river (with buses to return you to your start point. . .). There's a superb water park at Betaille half an hour away.

How to get there

STOP PRESS: the BrIve/ Souillac airport, which is only 30 mins away from Turenne, is rumoured to be operational from UK airports by June 2010. At the moment the easiest way to reach L'Auditoire from various UK airports is by Ryanair to Limoges (which is under an hour away) and hire a car at the airport, Europcar being the best deal of the major companies. The nearest airports after Limoges are Rodez (approx 2 hours away) , Toulouse (around 2 hours) and Bergerac (3 hours away). Using one or other of those airports EasyJet, Flybe and BMI are all options and relevant UK airports include Gatwick, Liverpool, Southampton, Exeter and East Midlands. From the US the best bet is either hiring a car in Paris or taking the train to Brive La Gaillarde in the Correze and hiring a car next to the train station.

A combination of L'Auditoire's history and unusual layout has given the house a charm which touches everyone who stays there. But it's practical too; the kitchen has every single appliance necessary. You can even have chefs who ran a renowned English restaurant come and cook for up to eight guests.

The lounge is large with extremely high beamed ceiling and cantou fireplace and also has a comfortable sofa bed for an extra guest .

It's a house which has style, tradition and comfort and that's shown by the very large master bedroom (overlooking an ancient chapel) with its own en suite bathroom. It also has it's own wood burning insert fire with warm air piped to the bathroom. Also on the second floor is the second large double bedroom and the second bathroom.

Circular stairs take you to the third floor where there are two single beds and a traditional French day bed which can also be used if required.

Further details outdoors:
A private screened terrace runs alongside the house and provides a perfect area for eating outside in the summer. Table chairs and sun umbrella are provided, as is a barbecue. If you want to cheat, there's also a bbq facility on the main cooker.

There is a wood store to the other side of the house and wood is provided for the two wood burning fires for winter lets.

The chapel opposite provides an ideal area for car parking with the car just yards from the house and perfectly safe. As only resident's and guest's cars are permitted at the top of Turenne it's a peaceful location.
A few yards from the house is a picnic area with tables and a panoramic view towards the Dordogne.

Guestbook for L'Auditoire

Add our names to the long list of those nourished in mind and spirit while staying at this magical house and village. John B, Vermont, USA

The charm of the house was balanced by the modern conveniences of the kitchen and bathrooms . Everything needed to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable was there. Bill & Joyce B, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

We called this our fairytale house. The location is breathtaking - atop a perfectly preserved medieval village, across from a 17th century chapel and below the remnants of a mighty chateau. Virginia S, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ,USA

Driving toward Turenne was magical. There it was was rising from the clouds. We just couldn't believe our luck to have chosen this place. We wound our way up narrow streets to the house which was more than we expected, beautiful and French. Trudy and John F, Auckland, New Zealand
