The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the second largest and least commercialised of the Canaries. It lies about 90 kilometres off the coast of Africa, with a climate similar to Mexico.
It has a wonderful, warm, year round climate, boasting about 3000 hours of sunshine a year. Fuerteventura is famous for its miles of magnificent, unspoilt and uncrowded beaches, which attract visitors from all around the world. Many kilometres of these white sand beaches, with their stunning, rolling dunes, have been declared a natural park and they are maintained to pristine perfection. The interior of the island is volcanic and relatively barren, with its own kind of unique beauty. Like the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura was formed by volcanic activity, (the last event was more than 7000 years ago) that gave the island its unusual contours.
Fuerteventura attracts water sports enthusiasts from all over the world for it excellent windsurfing, surfing and diving. The sunny climate, wonderful beaches and aquamarine waters are magnets to all lovers of nature and the excellent facilities in the resorts make this a destination for a memorable holiday for all ages and interests throughout the year.
The island’s largest and liveliest resort, Corralejo has a twice-weekly market and a good selection of reasonably-priced restaurants and bars. A little plaza in the middle of town is fun at night with musicians performing at the pavement cafés, while a small selection of discos and karaoke bars can be found in a dedicated commercial centre.
The incredible windsurfing, surfing and diving conditions in Corralejo attract water sports enthusiasts year after year; and boat trips to Lanzarote and the picturesque and uninhabited Isla de Lobos are popular attractions. Several small beaches, both sandy and rocky and swathes of untouched desert dunes, line the coast.
