The Fuerteventura region

The history:

An anonymous manuscript relates that the people of La Oliva was founded in 1500 by individuals known to the Hernandez brothers, residents of the Village of Betancuria.

Volcanic eruptions that occur on the island of Lanzarote in seven years, have consequences for the municipality, which will increase its population by whole families moving north of Fuerteventura.

Currently, agriculture mostly rainfed, is declining by the low profitability that provides water constraints and lack of manpower that has moved to the tertiary sector: construction, trade and tourism. As wit to retain moisture in the water, found in the highest concentration of Villaverde sanded the island.

Despite its decline in recent decades, La Oliva is the municipality with the highest number of goats with about 15,000 head. Contributing to this the large area devoted to grass, the Badlands, alfalfa and forage crops. The cheese is a product majorero culinary excellence that can be purchased directly at the various family dairies are distributed throughout our town.

Fishing was another important activity, concentrated by its tradition and its proximity to the coast, El Cotillo and Corralejo. It has suffered a spectacular drop socioeconomic stagnation and technical resources.

Since the seventies, tourism has become the engine of municipal development. La Oliva, along with Pájara are the municipalities of the island with more beds, existing in La Oliva about 17,000, most non-hotel. This development brings a significant population increase, especially as benchmark immigrant population, labor supply generated by tourism. This sharp increase has made it possible to pass from the 2,900 inhabitants of law in 1975, to nearly 20,000 today, making the population actually much higher.

Points of Interest:

The municipality is one of the richest archaeological areas of Fuerteventura island context. It has petroglyphs Tindaya Mountain and assemblies of construction debris, room caves, burial caves and remains of middens.

The 14.2% of the municipal area is protected natural areas. The quintessential natural spaces in our town are the natural parks of Corralejo and the islet of Lobos.

In the section of the monuments are made ??to Miguel de Unamuno, Burnt Mountain, in Tindaya.

Another place of interest is the Torre del Toston, called Torre de Nuestra Señora Del Pilar and San Miguel. Corresponds to type "cheese", named for its round shape and whose main function was to protect small beaches of the pirate attacks are common in the era. To do so, had a simple artillery team. The work done with stone quarried near the Hermitage of El Cotillo dates from the middle of the seventeenth century and has been declared a Cultural Historical Monument since 1949.

Climate:

The climate of Fuerteventura is not constant throughout the year, but in two words what would define as sunny and windy.

Summers are dry, sunny and windy. Is north-northwest wind which keeps us cool us, protects us from the dry Saharan neighbors, and is a gift for surfers, windsurfing, kite-surfing and swimming.

During the winter we sometimes have very occasionally gray days and storm water. If you are coming in winter'd recommend bringing something to protect water, jersey and shoes. But despite this, sure you can sunbathe and trust go home tanning.

Corralejo

The town is rich in expressions of folklore majorero. This always kept by the partying in the festivities, social gatherings, or the songs in times of sowing and grains collection. The stories and legends are imbued magical world, mainly in Tindaya environment. Survive traditions linked to the religious world, as the Rancho de Animas at Christmas, in the village of La Oliva.

In the procession of El Cotillo El Roque, in the month of August, in the evening and lit by torches moved Lady of Good Voyage from the hermitage of El Cotillo El Roque.

Like all the Canary Islands, the summer solstice is illuminated by the fires of San Juan, especially Vallebrón, where they celebrate the festival of St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Grace, on June 24. Corralejo celebrates the holidays del Carmen, in July, gracing the small boats and "gigs" the virgin who walk by the sea. Our Lady of Good Voyage, in El Cotillo, is paraded by fishermen during the festivities and allowed use prohibited fishing gear such as gill nets, ie placing walls of network in which the fish is caught. With him will be one involving asadero and strangers, which arise spontaneously carousing. In summer Tindaya celebrates Our Lady of Charity, El Roque San Martin de Porres, Villaverde San Roque, Los Dolores in San Antonio and La Caldereta Lajares. The Oliva celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Candelaria in February. Also in October, commemorates the invocation to the Virgin of the Rosary.

The quintessential winter holiday is the participatory and colorful Carnival Oliva, whose celebration is in the month of March each year. For a few days, Corralejo becomes the showcase of imagination and joy of our neighbors.

La Lucha Canaria is the native sport of the islands longest established. There are official competitions of regional insularity and equipment involving the municipality of La Oliva.

Activities:

"Lovely villa, private and everything you need."

Was a bit dubious about booking a villa privately as have heard stories about some not being maintained to well. Well I am glad I did! villa well kept and clean with everything you need. We paid the extra for pool and jucuzzi to be warm which is worth it if you are a wimp like me. This villa is really good as on the corner and quiet. We were worried about it not being to private but down stairs no one can see in and upstairs felt private enough too. Supermarket near by so can get all the smellies and food you need when you arrive. We hired a car which I would recommend to get to the beaches and town. Lovely lady let us in when we arrived and explained everything on Spanish. Our fault typical english people can't speak a word of Spanish or any other language in fact but everything is pretty self explaitry. Had a slight problem trying to work out the jucuzzi how to keep it warm but a quick look on google and worked it out. No one comes in and cleans so best to keep place clean as you go along which I naturally would when you are staying in someone else's place. Overall fantastic relaxing holiday. Would recommend this villa to anyone.
