The Fuerteventura region
For those of you destined to spend a week or so on this delightful, welcoming and relaxing island, here are some facts, figures and hopefully an insight into Fuerteventura. The weather is beautiful and with over 150 of the most gorgeous coastlines of all the Canary Islands it is an absolute paradise for the sun worshipers and water sport fanatics alike.
Average Daily Temperature per month January - 23C / 71F February & March - 24C / 74F April & May - 26C / 79F June - 27C / 80F July - 30C / 86F August & September - 32C / 90F October - 27C / 80F November & December - 27C / 80F
On the same latitude as Florida, temperatures on Fuerteventura rarely fall below 18C or rise above 32C. Fuerteventura boasts 152 beaches along its coastline with 50 kilometres of fine, white and 20 kilometres of black volcanic shingle. With 3,000 hours of sunshine a year expect to get into a relaxed mood while here (child permitting), lazing away those long summery days any time of year. As for rain, well don't bother packing your brollie you probably won't need it and even if it does rain you can always join the locals running out into the street celebrating the rare event like a bunch of loonies, well they don't call it Fraggle rock for nothing!
As well as the rain there are occasional sandstorms caused by a cloud of sand blown in from the Sahara. We are after all the nearest Canarian Island to Africa and the Western Sahara is only about 90km away. Its something to be seen rather than avoided (although asthma suffers should be careful) only the very heavy sandstorms will really affect you unless you've got your washing on the line outside in which case you'll have to start again, or if you have a car here and are a clean freak in which case the only solution is to put a blanket over your car.
Corralejo / La Capellania area
Fuerteventura is an ideal holiday destination for all beach lovers! You will find many different types of beaches dotted all around the island each with their very own unique characteristics and charm from the miles and miles of white sand stretching from the dunes in Corralejo in the north to the flat stretches of paradise beach in the south of the island around Jandia and Morro Jable.
Corralejo Beaches The beaches in the town are smaller and great for sunbathing but if you want picturesque scenery or water sports then the surrounding beaches heading out of town are the place to go as they are popular with windsurfers and the daredevil kite surfers. Flag beach is just outside Corralejo town, there are plenty of restaurants, bars and toilets around the beach and life guards patrol the area and is quite a good place to start. With its crystal clear water and white sand that goes on for miles, it's no wonder that the entire coastline from Corralejo down as far south as Guisquey are used regularly for all manner of media events and photo shoots. The neighbouring sand dunes which have national park status as well form part of the Corralejo beaches. Squint and you could be looking at snow covered hill, look again and you find yourself in the middle of the Sahara desert expecting Peter O'Toole or Omar Sharif to come charging down the dunes on a camel. To call this stretch of coastline spectacular just doesn't do it justice.
