The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the 2nd largest & the nearest to Africa of the 7 Canary Islands. It has a wonderful warm/hot climate with a breeze all year round so very little humidity. Rainfall is approximately only 5/6 days in the year! Its white sandy beaches are among the very best in Europe, especially just 2km from Corralejo, where you find the beautiful National Park area with miles of unspoilt white sand dunes all around you! The Atlantic Ocean is crystal clear tourquoise water, providing a wonderful contrast with the dark volcanic rocks..it attracts surfers from all over the world. It is known as the quieter island of the Canaries, relatively still wild and unspoilt. People just 'fall in love' (as we did!) with it straight away and come back again & again.
Corralejo area
Corralejo used to be a small fishing harbour village (just like El Cotillo is now) and it has retained the local charm with small winding streets,local shops where great bargains can be found, especially leather goods,linens, lace etc.it has a myriad of restaurants ranging from Spanish Tapas,Italian,Mexican,Steak houses,Chinese,Indian..you will be spoilt for choice! The Main Street is full of duty free shops where you can buy cosmetics, alchohol, cigarettes, electrical goods at great prices etc. There is a wonderful market on Mondays & Fridays where more bargains & gifts can be bought...be sure to bargain for a good price! Music square is definitely worth a visit in the evening. Colourful & lively, surrounded by various restaurants..you can sip Sangria & listen to local Spanish or international music..one night we were there, a young Russian musician treated us to beautiful Balalika music! The Spanish are great for festivals and they have a special square in the old town where they have local tastings of cheeses, wine, tapas for free! For the children, there is the new Baku Water Park and of course plenty of safe sandy beaches. If you feel like a trip into the Capital town Of Puerto Rosario (40 mins bus ride 5Euro return trip) there is a large new shopping Mall open all day called Las Rotundas, with an abundance of boutiques & shops of every kind!..even a Burger King! Puerto Rosario is also the main Port on the island with sailings to all the other Canary islands.
How to get there
Cheap flights available from UK airports , Thomas Cook, Monarch airlines,Iberia and Easyjet via Madrid. Aer Lingus direct flights from Dublin Airport 40 mins drive. Collection at airport can be arranged(30 Euros) Budget car hire at airport or in Corralejo. Excellent cheap local bus service passes door of apartment every half hour. Bus link to and from airport. 3 min walk to nearest beach, 10 min walk to town centre. Taxi 2.30Euro from apt to Harbour. Visit Lanzarote (20 min crossing every hour)
