The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura, the eastern most of The Canary Islands lies in the path of trade winds and enjoys an exceptional climate consisting of 20 degree centigrade all year round. Together with its beaches of fine white sand which contrast sharply with the volcanic landscape inland make the island one of the most magical destinations in Spain.
With 3,000 hours of sunshine a year equating to 8 hours every day, it has similar weather conditions to Mexico and Florida, sharing the same Latitude. It is virtually rain free all year round and any rain fall is normally between December and February, an average of just 16 days a year, with a total rainfall of just 138mm! Average day temperatures are between 18C - 26C all year round and average sea temperatures range between 17C - 23C.
None of the other Canary Islands can boast the impressive sand dunes and long sandy beaches, the longest approx, 98km. Fuerteventura is generally regarded as the oldest of all the Canary Islands created out of volcanic activity the last being around 7,000 years ago so don't worry! It isn't a lush green island due to the lack of rain but it's landscape is still dramatic from the barren volcanic ranges to the tropical white beaches and blue lagoons and see if you can spot any wild goats, the national animal of Fuerteventura roaming around the craggy landscape. You may also spot the odd camel in the sand dunes, not wild but part of a camel safari! Fuerteventura is a haven for Windsurfers & Kitesurfers. It has been a long established destination for mountain biking holiday seekers with miles of dry challenging volcanic terrain. Numerous surf breaks are close to Casa Levisa. The world famous Flag beach Windsurf & Kite Surf Centre is only 5 minutes away where you can take lessons or hire equipment
Corralejo area
Casa Levisa is only a 5 minute walk away from the nearest bars / restaurants / super market and taxi rank. Taxi's into Corralejo take about 4 minutes and cost €3. They are very cheap and friendly. Otherwise a 25 minute stroll will get you into the main town even cheaper!
Casa Levisa is only a 5 minute walk from the new Baku Water Park complete with pools, slides and water! There is also a market held here too on Fridays and Mondays.
Corralejo itself is originally a fishing village which has now developed into a major resort on the island, but has still retained it's old heart. The old town is situated on the small town beach where you will often see sand sculptures of dolphins or other sea scenes. These are amazing and solely made out of sand and water. Don't forget to leave some coins as appreciation for the creators hard work, especially if you take a photograph! The old town is a great place for dining especially on the marine walk with its spectacular views across to Los Lobos and Lanzarote, or why not capture the magic of Spain by dining in the old music square or Plaza Felix Estevez as it is really known.
From the old town you can walk to the port where you can catch a daily ferry to Lanzarote or Los Lobos or just sip a café con leche whilst enjoying the view, or walk further into town along Avenida del General Franco, where you will find more bars, restaurants and the main shopping area. Being part of Spain, don't forget that the Spanish enjoy their siesta everyday, so you will find that shops will close between 1pm - 5pm. Restaurants tend to stay open so you can always enjoy a long lunch at this time. The benefit of the siesta means that shops will stay open till 9pm / 10pm at night so you can browse round the shops after dinner.
Moving out of the town there are now 'locales' being built as Corralejo grows. Here you can pick up groceries and find small restaurants and bars, so if you don't fancy venturing into town at any point there are amenities right on your door step.
Further out of town you will find the magnificent 10km stretch of bleached sandy beaches and dunes, where you can while away the hours. Here you will find stone huts which you can use to get away from the wind, (Fuerte is known as the windy isle) and use these as your base camp for the day. You will find some small snack bars on the beach which serve excellent food, but make sure one is near where you stop! There are some sun loungers on the beach but again, it is mainly an unspoilt natural park so the best way to enjoy it is to take what you need for the day with you. Corralejo offers as much or as little as you wish to do during your stay here, you will find it a friendly town where the choice of shops, restaurants and bars is as varied as the people who visit.
