The Corinthia Region
Lefkada, with an area of 295 sq km, is the fourth largest of the Ionian Islands and has a coastline of 117 km. The easy access to the island across a floating bridge has made it a favourite with holidaymakers. The floating bridge is an excellent feat of engineering and can raise both ends and swivel round on its axis to allow yachts and fishing boats through the channel to the main harbor and down the East coast. This undiscovered island offers fabulous unspoilt beaches all along its coastline and it is a boater's paradise with its multitude of satellite islands, safe harbours and undiscovered bays. Some of the best known beaches are Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma, Pefkoulia and the Pringiponisa satellite islands are Scorpios originally owned by the late Aristotle Onassis and recently sold to Ekaterina Rybolovleva, the daughter of Russian billionaire businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, Meganisi, Sparti and Madouri owned by the family of the late national poet Aristotle Valaoritis.
The island of Lefkas or Lefkada is lesser known as a holiday destination to the wider audience in comparison to the neighbouring Corfu, Paxos and Cephalonia. This of course has ensured that it has maintained much of its character and traditional Greek identity. There are plenty of attractions even for the more discerning traveler. The impressive green landscape offers many beautiful walks and there is a very good book that can be bought locally with routes to follow. The long white beaches of the west coast are perfect for sun worshippers and family days out, and the crystal clear waters of the small coves on the east coast are a snorkeler's paradise. Beautiful old churches dotted around the island, museums in Lefkas Town and archaeological sites closeby are great for those looking for a bit of culture whilst on holiday. Lefkada also hosts a famous International Folklore Festival during the month of August.
Dessimi Beach. Villa Dessimi in 5 mins walk from beautiful Dessimi Beach. There are three tavernas on the beach. Dessimi Beach has motorboat hire facilities if you would like to explore the neighbouring islands or find your very own secluded beach. There is also pedalo hire which is great fun for the kids. Snorkelling is great in this area as the bay is fringed with rocks where there is lots of sealife.
Vlicho, 3 mins drive has some lovely local grocery stores with fresh fruit and vegetables and the essentials for your holiday plus there are a couple of very good bakeries. There are at least three tavernas in Vlicho.
Nidri, 10 mins drive, is the primary holiday resort on Lefkas. There are a variety of tavernas, restaurants and cafes here, also a handful of bars and a couple of nightclubs. The majority of shopping and tourist facilities are on the main street. Boat trips to the neighbouring islands depart daily from Nidri harbour.
Geni, 3 mins drive has some of the best waterfront fish restaurants on the island.
(10 mins drive) A long sandy beach dotted with restaurants and hotels on the outskirts of the town. Very good for children as it is very shallow for a relatively long way in and does not shelve almost at all. There lots of little restaurants where you may have lunch and water sports including paragliding, wakeboarding, water skiing and fun rides.
Porto Katsiki Beach
(approx. 45 mins drive) Porto Katsiki, the best known beach, is today considered one of the most outstanding in the whole of Europe. This is a beach of exceptional beauty at the most southern tip of the island. A gorgeous shingle beach framed by high limestone cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise water.
(approx. 45 mins drive). 296 or so, steps lead down to this stunning beach virginal fine shingle beach. One of the top beaches in the Ionian Sea this is a must for visitors to Lefkas island.
