Corfu / Corfu Town area
Corfu Town is one of the most beautiful cities of Greece, attracting people from all over the world. The visitor that will wander around the city will discover the magnificent mixture of the Venetian, French and British influences with the Greek tradition.
In the city of Corfu prevail the two Venetian fortresses that used to protect the residents with their powerful fortifications. Between the two fortresses extends the Old City recalling past ages, offering the opportunity for romantic strolls in enchanting surroundings. From the top of the fortresses one may enjoy the amazing view of the old town.
The large and beautiful Spianada square is the main focal point of the new city. There, at the Liston, the work of the French engineer Lesseps, visitors can have a cup of coffee or taste some traditional ginger beer underneath the shadow of trees. At the eastern side of Spianada is the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, the residence of the Commissioners during the occupation by the British, a building housing today the Museum of Asian Art.
Visitors may also visit the Archaeological and Byzantine Museum and admire the numerous samples of Corfiot architecture, the Folklore Museum, the Museum of Kapodistria, the Museum of Solomos and many more historical buildings.
Another main attraction of the Town is the numerous old churches, with most important the very impressive church of Agios Spyridon, who is the patron saint Corfu island.
Visitors may take a long walk to the famous narrow streets of the city, named cantounia and after the tour taste the local cuisine in one of the many picturesque little taverns of the city. At night this lively city offers numerous choices of entertainment with its famous bars and clubs.
Corfu is a vivid charming city that captivates the senses of visitors, who travel back to the island again to discover even more beauties!
