Home description

In the height of the summer, hillside houses such as this offer a retreat from busy roads and crowded beaches, with the added benefit of mountain breezes. Spiti Oneiro is so well-hidden from sight that few people know of its existence. Approached by an unmade road through olive groves that winds up from the main village of Spartillas on the North East coast, Spiti Oneiro offers you wide panoramic views over the bays and headlands of Corfu.

The name ‘Spiti Oneiro’ means ‘House of dreams’ in the Greek language, and as this private villa is set on a terraced hillside overlooking the sea, for a restful relaxing holiday, look no further. Sleeping a maximum of 8 people at any one time, this is the ideal chance for either a large family or two small families to holiday together. All four bedrooms are en-suite, balcony or terrace and have air conditioning.

Spiti Oneiro lies ideally between mountain and sea, close enough to the village of Spartilas with its mini market, churches, Kafenion and bakery: yet approx 15 minutes drive to the coastal road and Barbati beach with its friendly atmosphere, family run taverna’s and excellent water sports.

The Ionian Islands region

Corfu is the second largest, greenest Ionian island, and also the best known. In Greek, the island's name is Kerkyra (Ker-kih-rah). It was Homer's 'beautiful and rich land', and Odysseus' last stop on his journey home to Ithaca. Shakespeare reputedly used it as a background for the 'The Tempest'. In the 20th Century, the Durrell brothers, amongst others, extolled its virtues.

With its beguiling landscape of windflowers and cypress trees rising out of shimmering olive groves, Corfu is considered by many as Greece's most beautiful island. Rocky coves, stunning sunsets and golden sandy beaches captivate everyone that visits this Ionian jewel also known as the Emerald Island.

Corfu has managed to maintain its distinct Mediterranean feel with miles of coastline for visitors to enjoy their holiday. Secret coves, deserted beaches and lively bars and discos ensure that there is something for everyone to enjoy from their holiday.

Corfu / Spartilas area

Spiti Oneiro lies ideally between mountain and sea, close enough to the village of Spartilas with its mini market, churches, Kafenion and bakery: yet approx 15 minutes drive to the coastal road and Barbati beach with its friendly atmosphere, family run taverna’s and excellent water sports.

Barbati is perched at the foot of Mount Pantokrator, amidst green cypress trees; it has breathtaking views across to Corfu Town on the right and Albania on the left. The sheer, rocky backdrop secludes Barbati from the rest of the island, giving it an isolated, hidden feel. The village also offers a small selection of bars, tavernas, supermarkets, launderette and souvenir shops, with a newly built church in the centre of the village.

Barbati took its name from the mansion of the noble Barbatis family and its beach is a white stretch of shingle against an azure sea. Wonderfully situated to provide whatever you are looking for in a holiday: You can laze in the sun, explore the coast by boat, take part in all kinds of water sports and enjoy the good restaurants….should you ever want to leave the private pool at Spiti Oneiro!!

The next resort south of Barbati is Ipsos, one of the liveliest resorts on Corfu, stretching out along one kilometre of pebbly but gently shelving beach. The natural curve of the bay of Ipsos is a scenic setting, with fine views along the coast to Corfu Town, the green hills inland and the mountains of mainland Greece and Albania. The resort mainly comprises a broad, straight main road just above the beach which curves into a tiny harbour. Its main appeal lies in the availability of water sports, which include pedaloes, para-gliding, water-skiing, windsurfing and boat hire. The sea is clean, Ipsos has been awarded a European Blue Flag.
At night the action moves into the video bars, cocktail bars, pubs and clubs. If you prefer to eat, Ipsos has a huge selection of tavernas and snack bars as well as English, Chinese and Italian restaurants.

Dassia has an abundance of quality restaurants offering a good selection of both traditional Greek cuisine and unique Corfiot dishes. There are plenty of tavernas to choose from, both basic tavernas and quality restaurants to keep everyone happy. The Greeks adore children and they are more than welcome in most bars and restaurants.

Over on the west coast, Paleokastritsa has a number of small coves and offers a choice of beach to visit every day! Regular boat trips to the neighbouring resort of Liapades and to the ‘Blue Caves located just off the resort, Scuba Diving, Water sports and boat hire can all be enjoyed from Paleokastritsa. Perched on a rock overlooking the resort is the 18th Century working Monastery of Theodokou, open daily to visitors it boasts a working Olive Press, small Chapel and spectacular views from its elevated position. A short drive from Paleokastritsa lay the villages of Krini, Vistonas and Makrades. The Angelokastro, located just behind the village of Krini now in a state of ruin, rises high above the village, its’ battlements still visible, a footpath will take you to the top to enjoy unrivalled views from its vantage points.

The villagers of the agricultural settlements of Makrades and Vistonas regularly sell their wares to visitors passing through, freshly pressed Olive Oil, Corfiot Honey, and locally made village wine, can all be bought very reasonably from their little roadside stalls. Ermones, also on the west coast, has a small beach of shingle, pebbles, sand and flat rocks for sunbathing on. A particularly large rock in the bay is said to be a pirate chief turned to stone for trying to steal a sacred icon from the local church. The nearby long golden sandy beach of Glyfada is approximately 10 minutes drive away!

At The Ropa Valley, is the Corfu Golf Club, acclaimed as one of the best courses in the Mediterranean, with a devious stream that meanders across to fewer than 16 of the 18 holes. Clubs can be hired quite cheaply. Kalami and many areas of Corfu are synonymous with the Durrell family, though it is a little surprising perhaps, that of the two brothers, Lawrence (1912 – 1990) and Gerald (1925 – 1995), it was Gerald the naturalist rather than Lawrence, the poet who has so inextricably linked the family name with the island of Corfu.

Acharavi is a busy and lively resort set on the North coast of Corfu, boasting something for everyone. It is not just a resort, it is the main town for the North of the island and many of the local people visit Acharavi on a regular basis as there is a post office, banks, a dentist and doctors and all the facilities found in a modern town. You will also find shops such as hardware stores and flower shops. Acharavi has plenty of Tavernas and bars, and a good, long, sandy beach. Behind the resort, set in the hills are excellent walking paths. These have recently been cleared and are part of the Corfu trail. The shops in the main town are situated either side of the main road which runs through Acharavi. Little streets run off this road down to the beach where you will find many of the beach Tavernas and bars.

Sidari is a long-standing favourite with families and singles alike, thanks to its excellent beaches and relaxed atmosphere. The main beach is a two mile curve of sand and shingle, with safe swimming and a good selection of water sports. The resorts single main street is lined with shops and a wide choice of tavernas and bars. After sundown, it’s lively without going over the top, and there are a couple of good discos. It’s easy to see why this area is such a popular choice with all kinds of holidaymakers.

Flights can be obtained from most UK airports between May and October. When searching for flights the name of the airport is Corfu (it is located in Corfu Town and is sometimes listed as Kerkyra), the main flying days from the UK are either Monday or Friday. There are a couple of flights that leave on Tuesdays and Wednesdays or alternatively it is possible to reach the island via Athens.

During the Winter Season (November to April) at present there are no direct flights to the island therefore you would have to fly via Athens. You can also travel to Corfu by ferryboat from both Athens and Italian ports such as Venice and Brindisi throughout the year.
