The Ionian Islands region

Corfu – or Kerkyra (ker-kih-rah) in Greek – is the second-largest and the greenest Ionian island. It is also the best known. It was Homer's 'beautiful and rich land', and Odysseus' last stop on his journey home to Ithaki.

Shakespeare reputedly used it as a background for The Tempest. In the 20th century, writers the Durrell brothers – among others – extolled its virtues.

With the nation's highest rainfall, scores of vegetables and herbs thrive here, especially in spring.

With its beguiling landscape of wildflowers, and cypress trees rising out of shimmering olive groves, Corfu hangs in there as one of Greece's most beautiful islands.

Discover Ipsos Beach

The resort of Ipsos is nearly a mile in length, with most of the action facing the beach. There are traditional Greek tavernas and restaurants plus Italian and Chinese restaurants, cocktail bars, discos and English pubs lining the boardwalk. Ipsos has a long shingled beach, which gently curves round to a tiny harbour. Mid-way between the resort and the harbour there is a jetty where boat excursions are available. These include trips up the coast to the resort of Kassiopi where you can buy hand-made lace items. Ipsos also offers water-skiing, paragliding, wind-surfing, pedalo hire and scuba diving.

Getting about is easy on the frequent bus service to Corfu Town. Open jeeps, cars and push bikes may all be hired in the resort. Approximate transfer time from airport: 30 minutes.

Discover Corfu Town

Set on a peninsula and serving as both main port of entry and the commercial center of the island, Corfu Town is home to nearly half the population of Kerkyra. Even visitors staying in outlying areas are likely to pay at least one visit to Corfu Town, as it is a bustling and vibrant city, as well as being rich in historical and scenic attractions. Stroll through the "old city" or the Jewish Quarter, visit both the old and the new fortresses, Mon Repos, the Achillion Palace, the Asian Art Museum, the Archeological Museum and Saint Spirodon Church. There are many fine restaurants and often free theatrical presentations in the National Theatre. Afterwards you can have a drink or a coffee at one of the many cafes on the Liston, where tourists and locals stroll day and evening.
