The Ionian Islands region
THE IONIAN ISLANDS lie just off the west coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. They're believed to be the tips of a submerged mountain chain that runs from the Adriatic to the Peloponnese.
There are seven main islands (the Greek name for the group is Eptanissa, 'the seven islands'). Of these, six - Corfu, Paxos, Ithaca, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos - are what most people think of the Ionians. (The seventh, Kythira, is to the south of the Peloponnese, so far apart from the others that it doesn't feel part of the same group.)
All Islands are lush, mountainous, green (they get lots of rain in winter) and very picturesque. They look less typically Greek than other islands - in fact they feel more Italian, with their slender trees and old Venetian buildings in shades of pink and ochre.
Abundant on the islands are deep green pine forests, olive & citrus groves, vineyards and the displays of wildflowers - anemones, irises, daisies, orchids - are beautiful in spring, especially in Corfu.
• Set on level land at the mouth of a wide valley between high rocky headlands, this collection of private houses, small hotels, tavernas and some apartments sprawls lazily behind the beach road. You will not find any tall apartment blocks or large self-catering complexes here, just small family run enterprises.
• The long, wide, sandy beach at Aghios Georgios (North) is wonderful, very clean, with a crystal clear sea and considered by many as the best beach in Corfu. It regularly receives a Blue Flag award from the EU for its quality and cleanliness.
• There are a whole variety of facilities available including sunbeds, umbrellas, beach showers and lifeguard stations.
• Numerous water sports are available, including wind- surfing, water skiing, sailing, motor boats, windsurfing and scuba diving with tuition, etc...
• There are quite a few snack bars, restaurants and tavernas dotted along the horse-shoe shaped bay for
when the sun gets too hot and exhausting!
• Boat trips available to the Diapontian Islands

"A marvellous villa in excellent condition, with attentive owners who want to ensure you enjoy your holiday"
A well designed and equipped villa, the owners provided all the little extras to make our arrival and stay so comfortable, remaining attentive to our needs throughout our stay – they helped to make it a wonderful holiday. Located towards the north end of the beach it has the benefit of being quiet, whilst close to the beach and with a range of places to eat, supermarket etc within easy walking distance.
Thank you Paul for taking the time to post this lovely review - it was a pleasure to have you and your party stay. We look forward to you staying again.
