The Ionian Islands region
The island of Corfu (Kerkyra) is located just off the west coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands. Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holiday makers. Corfu is very green compared to other Greek Islands. Hot dry summers along with winter rain creates lush vegetation which is dominated by olive trees and cypress trees.
Corfu’s area covers 588 square km. The length of the island is 64km. and 32km. at the widest point. Its coastline spans 217km. including the bays. It is mountainous, the highest mountain being Mt. Pantokrator (906m.). There are several flat areas the largest being the Ropa Valley.
Corfu is accessible from the mainland by two ports, one in the town and the other in Lefkimmi south of the island. The international airport is ‘Ioannis Kapodistrias’ which is in the town.
The Island has a varied history which can be seen by the architecture. It was occupied by the Venetians and the French before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars.
In 1864 the Ionian Islands became part of the Hellenic Republic (Greece).
In the town there are two forts the old and the new. Looking out from the Old Fort you have a panoramic view of the town. The Esplanade (Spianada) was constructed by the Venetians on a cleared section of the medieval town. The Liston, an arcade of arches housing cafes and restaurants is a direct influence from the French. A popular meeting place to watch the world go by. Towering above the town is the church of Saint Spyridon the Patron Saint of the Island.
Corfu Town is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and this has helped to protect and preserve the architecture and monuments.
Messonghi resort is a combination of beach and mountain.Close to coast you can find a lot of restaurants,
Caffe shops and watersports. Inside the island a visitor can see plenty of olive farms and vineyard, and the
view from the mountain above Messonghi is magnificent.
One of the principal components of the Corfiot landscape is, without doubt, its lush vegetation in all its never-ending hues. Unlike other parts of Greece where any greenery withers and dries up in the summer months, in Corfu it remains fresh all year round; indeed, depending on the season, the island’s amazing verdure is diffused with the colours of trees in blossom or heavy with fruit and the flowers, wild or cultivated, that grow in such profusion. The shimmering blue sea forms a perfect backdrop to the assorted shades of green of the Corfiot countryside..
