The Ionian Islands region
Corfu is the second largest island in the group of Ionian Islands, after Kefalonia and was the first to open itself up to tourism with plenty to offer its visitors. It attracts visitor from all over the world and is one of those rare destinations that caters for all ages and tastes.
Corfu is known as Kerkyra in Greek and takes its name from a variation of the Nymph Korkira, daughter of the Greek river god Aesopos in mythology. Legend says that the god of sea, Poseidon fell in love with the Nymph Korkira, kidnapped her and then brought her to the Island, hence the name Kerkyra.
The island of Corfu has been described as the Emerald Isle, the Garden of Eden and by Homer himself, a beautiful and rich land all this is due to the lush green hills, towering mountains, clear blue seas, pure white sands, endless olive groves and colourful wild flowers.
Corfu is full of variety from its traditional fishing villages to its large modern resorts, coupled with its amazing wildlife, over six hundred types of wild flowers and numerous exotic birds including pelicans, bee eaters, hoopoes and golden orioles; this island has something for everyone!
The Corfu / Kalami area
Kalami attracts mostly families and couples liking peaceful and relaxing holidays. However, if you feel like bored of calmness and relaxation, Kassiopi with the noisy bars and clubs and the intense nightlife is only at a distance of 20 minutes drive. You will enjoy fresh fish, local dishes and international cooking in the sea front taverns of the settlement and of the broader area.
Swimming is possible at the beautiful pebbly beach with the crystal clear sea, in front of the settlement. The beach has been awarded a blue flag. You may also visit the beach of Kouloura at a distance of 20-minutes walk, at the right of Kalami; or you may choose Kerasia (30 minutes walk).

It's impossible to imagine the views from the olive laden hills on the island of Corfu. The blue of the sea is so complicated in its gradation's it's absurd; at the shore line it's transparent and you can almost see the zip of silver as the fish swim by it's so clear. As it gets deeper it is a kind of cerulean blue pigment which makes you feel at once calm and dazed, it's the kind of view where you can stand at the window just staring before popping inside for a glass of local wine and some olives. The villa is simple yet comfortable enough for a family. The kitchen is small but competent and it has two bathrooms with erratic water supply. There is a lovely pool at the top of the garden although we stayed in winter and it was far too cold to contemplate a dip. Location wise, we found it quite a drive to the local supermarket and tavern so a hire car is necessary. Most places in our area were hibernating in winter, ready to awaken for the one million tourists who travel to the island in summer…it seemed as if we were the only tourists wintering on the island and this made our stay even more unique. We wondered around the roads admiring the vistas and remarking at the number and grandness of the shuttered summer villas. Corfu is a very special place and a great place to spend winter: writing, reading and sketching. If only the villa had a fire place… |
