The Ionian Islands region
The Ionian island of Corfu, known as the ‘Emerald Isle’ due to its lush green countryside and crystal clear coves, holds many unexpected and unforgettable surprises where you will discover the legendary friendliness of the locals that will undoubtedly make your stay on the island a memorable experience.
Corfu / San Stephanos area
Also known as Aghios Stefanos it was once a sleepy fishing village and has since become quite a secluded and prestigious resort favoured by many of the rich and famous. This is due to the fact that although it can be reached by road it is more accessible by boat.
San Stephanos is a chic but small low key villa resort with a pretty harbour area where you will find 2 sophisticated cocktail bars, 2 supermarkets, 4 waterside tavernas, a lovely gift shop, a tourist office and boat hire office. A small beach to the left of the harbour where you will find parasols and sunbeds available for hire or you can walk to the next bay of Kerassia which is only accessible via road from San Stephanos or else by boat or on foot. Here again you will find sunbeds available and a single family run taverna and excellent swimming.
Neighbouring Avlaki beach is also nearby with its watersports, 2 tavernas and dinghy sailing school and horse riding all just a short drive/walk away.
5 minutes further than Avlaki you will find Kassiopi which is still a small yet bustling resort with a strong emphasis on both families and couples. It has a pretty harbour from which boat trips and excursions can be taken surrounded by waterside cafes. A wide range of shops around the village square including 2 larger supermarkets, a chemist, butcher, bakery and laundry etc. Many varied restaurants Italian, Mexican, Chinese and of course excellent Greek tavernas to cater for every taste. Several bars and a of club available late evening should anyone feel the need for a little more life. 3 beaches with excellent watersports including windsurfing and a dive centre.
Car/Boat hire is recommended if you wish to explore more of the island though not a necessity. There are some lovely walks to be found exploring the surrounding bays and neighbouring villages.
Corfu Town is a must with its Italianate arcades, Venetian fortress and cobbled alleys it boasts everything from boutiques to traditional craft shops open late into the evening. Aside from shopping you can watch an afternoon of cricket sipping coffee from below the arches of the Liston Arcade. Not forgetting the Corfu Trail (see www.corfutrail.org) for those who like to see the island on foot or the monastery at Paleokastritska and many other attractions on the island.
The Corfu Trail Walking – those who love walking will love Kalami as there are many paths that wind up through lush countryside, olive, lemon and orange trees, linking each bay along the coast treading in the footsteps of the Durrell brothers, Corfu at its best. There is also The Corfu Trail, a long-distance footpath which runs the length of the island, from its southernmost tip to its northernmost point fully waymarked in both directions. It meanders through all the island's rural municipalities and avoids heavily developed areas to the island's beauty spots, beaches, picturesque villages, monuments, monasteries and diverse landscapes. The official Corfu Trail Guide Book is available at various locations along the trail as well as several bookshops. You can find out more at their official website www.corfutrail.org
Avlaki Sailing School The local sailing centre is located at Avlaki bay between San Stephanos and the resort of Kassiopi, the sweeping picturesque bay with its crystal clear waters has the ideal sailing conditions giving a feeling of security within its protective headlands on either side www.corfu-sailing-events.com
Scuba Diving There is a fantastic dive centre located in the centre of Kassiopi which has a range of options available including instruction for beginners, qualifications, pool training and day and night dives. Corfu Divers also offer Deep-Sea Fishing excursions
Horse Riding Horse riding can be arranged in advance or during your stay with our friend Dimitri from Dimitris Taverna who runs a small friendly riding stables also in nearby Avlaki. Spend a beautiful morning surrounded by nature, with animals that you love, experiencing a unique journey on a horse in unspoilt forests with a view that will astound you journeying to a remote beach normally difficult to reach.
There is also an excellent Golf course about a 30 minute drive from the property having outstanding panoramic views.
How to get there
Flights can be obtained from most UK airports between May and October. When searching for flights the name of the airport is Corfu (it is located in Corfu Town and is sometimes listed as Kerkyra), the main flying days from the UK are either Monday or Friday. There are a couple of flights that leave on Tuesdays or alternatively it is possible to reach the island via Athens, however most of our properties have their changeover day as Monday or Friday accordingley.
During the Winter Season (November to April) at present there are no direct flights to the island therefore you would have to fly via Athens. You can also travel to Corfu by ferryboat from both Athens and Italian ports such as Venice and Brindisi throughout the year.
Corfu Village Properties are a member of the Skydeals VIP Scheme. Through our membership our clients are able to book discounted flights. Owned by Thomson they are one of the leading flight only specialists in the UK. You can visit their website www.skydeals.co.uk however please note that you will need to phone their dedicated hotline 0500 011 747 and quote our membership number VIPS3738 to obtain a discounted fare.
We do advise you to shop around as finding the cheapest flight is not an exact science and there does not seem to be a trend. The prices offered will depend on things like the time of year booked, how far in advance and which airport you travel from etc. If you have any difficulty in finding a good price and would like some assistance with travel arrangements then please do not hesitate to ask we are happy to help in any way we can.
