The Ionian Islands region

All of the Ionian Islands are very different. Corfu being the farthest North has the coolest Winter with some rain, but as a result the island is green and lush with rolling hills. Due to its strategic position and proximity to other European countries, Corfu has a colourful past and the fort in Corfu town is an impressive reminder of its bloody history, but now it is the destination of the Jet Set, with some notable new residents in recent years.

Corfu

Corfu is the most Northerly Greek island and is the greenest. It lies off the west coast of Greece and Albania, the mountains of which are visible from Agios Stefanos. Corfu has only 100,000 inhabitants and tourism and olives are its main industries. It has a rich cultural history - it has been the subject of several invasions over the centuries, but now with the Cruise ship terminal in Corfu Town - the capital and the calm warm waters around the island, it has become a haven for the discerning holiday-goer.

The temperature in the summer is between 30-40 degrees and the cooling 'Maestro' wind makes the temperature bearable and thankfully not humid. Agios Stefanos is a small village with only 4 hotels plus apartments and some villas. It has never succumbed to the attraction of the mass market and has managed to retain much charm and a very laid back approach. Visitors return year after year to a warm welcome from the friendly locals who remember everybody somehow and now it is a good mix of families and couples who are well catered for with numerous restaurants and lively bars where you can stay as long as you like. Lots of the restaurants put on local dancing and music and the bars have karaoke, tribute acts and bingo nights, so there is something for everyone. Close to the village is the Canal D'Amor at Sidari, a lovers meet, plus there is the old mountain village of Old Paraitha and the beautiful Paleokastritsa, frequented by Prince Charles, is only 3 miles to the South. If you like a good festival, Easter is the time to come as Corfu town (45 mins from Agios Stefanos) hosts the biggest festival every year and everyone takes to the streets with floats, musicians, dancing and religious processions. There are 2 water parks within 20 minutes of Agios Stefanos plus there is a day trip available from the little harbour to the small pretty island of Paxos

"Sheer luxury with great views"

My wife and I stopped in the paralia apartments on our first trip to San stefanos in 2012 , the apartments are by far the best apartments in the area with amazing views to the sea and evening sunsets , they are equipped to a very high standard with a modern decor.
The apartments are owned by Stefanos from the Condor bar in the town and he goes out of his way to make you feel very welcome . We have returned to San Stefanos on 3 other occasions since 2012 and have loved each visit , this place is truly a gem .
