Manor House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 8
This restored Venetian manor house, built well before the invasion of concrete and cement, has the advantage of position and very thick stone walls maintaining a constant temperature, managed by shutters. Although air- conditioning has been fitted in the bedrooms, due to popular request. The historic atmosphere of Villa Alexina has been maintained and modernised sympathetically and consists of an enormous kitchen, a cool lounge with, sound system and comfortable seating. If you are an avid reader, we can organise for a selection from over 3,000 books from the Durrell School Library to await your arrival. We also have wi-fi at the villa, for those who need to keep contact with the real world; which is easy to forget once you arrive.
There are three bedrooms, one pretty en-suite with original wooden floor boards, a double bed and a large private veranda with breath-taking views - often taken by honeymooners. There are a further two bedrooms on the top floor with a shared bathroom. This is popular with families with young children as it has a bath, stair gate and room without balcony for very small children. Meanwhile the parents can enjoy the views from the Juliet balcony from their beds in the large original bedroom on this floor (which can take four beds easily for two families sharing).
The swimming pool has been carefully designed to incorporate a children's pool, giving a safe contained space for young children to gain confidence. It is lit at night with underwater lights with atmospheric Moroccan wall lights peeping between the trees. Most importantly, the swimming pool can be locked with strong gates and then the steps leading to this lower level can also be locked - giving a double locking system for maximum safely. This attention to safety is not common in Greece.
The grounds are extensive, with established plants and fruit trees there is a space for everyone; after all life in Corfu is outside, the huge patio shaded by a two hundred year old grapevine is the main living area with seating areas for eating as well as relaxing with a book or dream.
The owners are ex farmers and grow all their own vegtables, you are often offered tomatoes or courgettes freshly picked. There are also many cooperative vans in the village selling vegtables, fish and local wine - some people never leave the premises!

The Ionian Islands region
The island of Corfu is located just off the West coast of Greece. Corfu enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate along with excellent beaches making it a popular destination for holidays. Corfu's lush vegetation which is dominated by over 2 million olive trees are the main source of farming on this Ionian island; however visitors now provide most of the income to the local economy. Development of cultural tourism is increasing with exiting initiatives funded by the EEC.
Agios Spiridon is probably best known as "The beach of the white lillies" where the famous picnic is described in Gerald Durrell's MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS. The hamlet of Agios Illias is above the traditional village of Perithia offers two tavernas serving local food, two shops, a butchers and a bar. One of the most bizzare strokes of luck is the positioning of Ice Dream Gelateria serving home made ice cream just outside the village - even the Italians agree it is outstanding ice cream

"Wonderfully restored villa with fine views, in walking distance of shops and restauarants."
We stayed here in April for a week and had a really great time at Alex and David's restored Venetian Villa. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped, including free wifi and a a nice hifi (you can use iphone/ipad etc with it). First floor lounge is great with enormous plasma telly, log fire for those cooler early months. Main bedroom is next to the lounge and has a huge patio with recliners and views over to Albania - perfect for those early evening summer cocktails! Two more bedrooms on the second floor and of course the cool vine covered terrace, with sofas, and plenty of tables for evening meals. There's a beautiful swimming pool, too, with oranges and lemons growing around it - in season you're welcome to pick these for your breakfast juice!. There's lots to do and see in nearby villages and good cheap restaurants and shops too. Alex and David are great hosts, really knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and are happy to advise on any detail to ensure you make the most of your Corfu holiday. We'd recommend anyone to stay here - it's brilliant!
