The Ionian Islands region
Corfu is the most interesting and cosmopolitan of the seven Ionian islands, or the Eptanisa. The greenest of the Greek islands, Corfu has over three million olive trees and is renown for its flower-strewn countryside, its splendid coastal scenery and excellent secluded beaches.
Corfu Town is one of the most attractive cities in the whole of Greece, with its mixture of architecture and cultures.
The city is located in the middle of the island's east coast and is built on a small promontory which divides the town into two parts. Despite the damage it suffered from bombing raids during the second world war, it still retains a strong Venetian style. The large and beautiful Spianada square is the focal point of the city. On the west side of Spianada lies the Liston, a replica of the Rue de Rivoli in Paris and designed in 1809 by Matthieu de Lesseps. The Old Fort, built by the Venetians, lies on the east side. To the north of Spianada stands the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. The Palace was designed by a British architect in 1823 and was used as the official residence of the Governor and as the headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. It now houses the Museum of Asian Art and an Art Gallery. Just behind the Liston, is the church of Agios Spyridonas, dedicated to the patron saint of the island of Corfu. It was built in 1589. On the exterior of the church is a tall, castellated bell-tower with a clock which resembles that of Saint George in Venice.
Corfu / Corfu Town area
As well as relaxing on one of the many Corfu beaches, there are many interesting excursions within close distance of Corfu Town. For example, in Kanoni you can visit the royal estate of Mon Repos, where Prince Philip was born and also Pontikonissi (Mouse Island) with its famous little chapel. The Achilleion, constructed for Elizabeth, (Princess Sissy), Empress of Austria in1892 10 km south of Corfu in Gastouri, is also well worth a visit, as is the 13th Century Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro, near Palaiokastritsa.
There are also many museums of interest to visit in Corfu, including: The Archaeological Museum, pride of which is the “Gorgon Pediment’, the oldest surviving monumental sculpture in Greece. The Paper Money Museum, founded and maintained by the first Greek Bank, the Ionian Bank. The Solomos Museum, dedicated to the poet Dionysios Solomoswho came to Corfu in 1823 and became the leader of the literary revival. The Byzantine Museum set in Corfu Town’s oldest 15th century church of Antivouniotissa.
There is an international music festival from 17th June to 31st July.
Another attraction of Corfu is the championship 18 hole golf course in the Ropa Valley. There are many walking routes in Corfu, both in town and in the countryside, including the 220km Corfu Trail which consists of 11 daily walks combining beautiful seashores and landscapes including Mount Pantokrator.
Cheap charter flights are available from many European cities from 1st May to 31st October. Scheduled flights are available year round with Olympic Airways, Alitalia, Aegean Airlines, British Airways and KLM. Local taxis are available for the short distance from the airport to the apartment in town (cost about 6 euros). Should you wish to rent a car, we suggest you book on-line for the best rates and pick up your car on arrival at the airport. If you prefer to travel by car, there are daily ferries from several Italian cities to Corfu.
