The Ionian Islands region
The Ionian Islands are a group of islands in Greece. They are traditionally called the Heptanese, i.e. "the Seven Islands", but the group includes many smaller islands as well as the seven principal ones.
The six northern islands are off the west coast of Greece, in the Ionian Sea. The seventh island, Kythira, is off the southern tip of the Peloponnese, the southern part of the Greek mainland. Kythira is not part of the region of the Ionian Islands, as it is included in the region of Attica.
The seven are, from north to south:
Kerkyra usually known as Corfu
Paxi also known as Paxos
Lefkada also known as Lefkas
Ithaki usually known as Ithaca
Kefalonia often known as Kefalonia, Cephalonia and Kefallinia
Zakynthos sometimes known as Zante and Kythira usually known as Cythera and sometimes known as Cerigo
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands and, including its small satellite islands, forms the edge of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered as a single municipality. The municipality includes the island Corfu and the smaller islands Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality is also named Corfu.
In 2007, the old city was designated for the UNESCO World Heritage List, following a recommendation by ICOMOS.
Glyfa lie between Barbati and Nissaki, two of the most well-known seaside resorts in Corfu, where you can find many shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
At the beach of Barbati you can enjoy swimming or rent a boat and discover the beaches of the area The water sports are available in the main beach of Barbati. Glyfa's beach is a peaceful and safe place for little children as well as for adults, as it is situated in the east side of the island, close to the mainland coast.
For them who love hiking we should mention that there are some interesting pathways that lead to the mountain 'Pantokrator' .
