Villa Ionia is unique. On the island of Corfu there are no other rental villas that offer the combination of stunning sea, sunset and local island views, 4 double ensuite bedrooms (all with sea views) and, un-overlooked privacy. For its size (about 2500 square feet) Villa Ionia is also one of the most spacious homes on the island. It was designed to maximise space and light - from its 60 square metre open plan lounge kitchen dinning room to the wonderful beamed and vaulted ceilings in the first floor bedrooms leading to very large balconies and the wall to wall glass doors and window sections in the sea facing wall of the lounge. Naturally Villa Ionia is equipped with all essential modern facilities including air-conditioning throughout, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, coffee machine, Wi Fi internet access and a host of other items. Most unusually a rental car is included with Villa Ionia. Of course for those requiring the additional services of a cook, nanny, or even a personal guide, these can be easily arranged also.

Externally, Villa Ionia offers a lounge set, sun loungers, parasols and of course dinning table and chairs. New for 2014 is a poolside terrace extension finished in African hardwood decking and a large pergola covering the 10 seat stone and marble statement dining table with olive press wheels forming the base.

Across the shallow end of the swimming pool, full width steps were incorporated into the design, making it a great place to sit with a cool drink in hand.

Villa Ionia's position is perfect; set in 1.5 acres of a tranquil olive grove clad hillside, privacy is assured, yet the resort is just a few minutes drive away or a pleasurable walk. By day, lunch around the pool, or at one of the lovely authentic family run tavernas on the beachfront or close by. By evening the sunsets from Villa Ionia are amongst the the most beautiful in the Mediterranean as they transform the local islands to silhouettes, never the same on any two nights.

There are of course a superb selection of tavernas and chic but inexpensive bars in the resort that offer views of the setting sun between the islands.

Villa Ionia is best suited to discerning independent travellers and in that respect we wanted to create a home that offers the comforts and facilities expected in a villa but in a location that is what we like to call the real Greece, rather than a tourist version of it. To that end, we chose Arrilas, away from the madding crowds of the more touristic East coast and far enough away from other busier resorts. In Arillas there are no hoards of rowdy BBQ boat day trippers flooding the tavernas and beaches and no nightclubs.

The rustic and peaceful location of the house opens to numerous walks through several local villages, along the coastline, through olive groves, meandering country tracks or cliff-top footpaths. On the seafront a small selection of water sports are available as is boat hire and the beach itself, awarded the coveted EU Blue Flag, is of fine golden sand and the incredibly clear water is shallow making it ideal for children. Arillas has been described by many as being as the North East was 30 years ago only with the essential sand beach and spectacular sunset views.

I'm often asked why we built Villa Ionia in Arillas; A few years ago I was in a dilemma as to whether to build on the North East or North West coast of Corfu. I was asked the simple question: Do I prefer sunrise, or sunsets - what would I prefer to look at? Who wakes up at 5 am on holiday I thought, so my response was simple - sunset of course. Why then was I looking on the east coast? came the next question. With that realisation, I invite you to Villa Ionia which is in the small hamlet of Arillas on the North West Coast of the enchanting Greek Island of Corfu.

The Ionian Islands region

Corfu or Kerkyra as it is known as in Greece is one of seven principal Ionian islands and is located partly off the North West corner of mainland Greece and just one mile at the closest point to Albania. The region enjoys long hot summers and mild winters. Temperatures in May for example generally reach the late 20's and move well into the 30's throughout June, July, August in into September. During May and September the ionian Islands are awash with floral colour. Corfu, like much of Greece has its historical routes in the ancient times. In more recent centuries the island has been ruled by many nations including, France, Russia and Britain. But it was the Venetians who left their mark most prominently. In fact Corfu town itself strongly resembles Venice (without the Gondolas and waterways) and as such is simply a must see place to visit. Corfu has been the subject of many books, paintings and stunning photography and of course a choice location for many film and television productions including the Bond feature 'For Your Eyes Only' and My Family and Other Animals. With its dramatic landscapes, turquoise and azure seas, and blanket forestation of around six million olive trees interspersed with cypress pines, the Greek Island of Corfu is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the Med and indeed in Europe.

Arillas is perfectly placed about three quarters of the way up the north west coast. It arguably enjoys the most spectacular sunsets on the island, enhanced by the three Diapontian islands on Ericoussa, Othoni an Mathraki.

This north west corner of Corfu has thankfully seen far less tourism than the East and South of the island. Agriculture still plays an important part of the locals lives so despite the beautiful views from Villa Ionia it occupies an idylic semi rural hillside location. The seas in this area are particularly clean contributing to Arillas's blue flag sandy beach.

Villa Ionia is ideally located for access to several beautiful local villages such as Afionas with its breathtaking views and wonderful cliff top walks, the beach and bay of St George, the villages of Magoulades with its monastery , Kavadades and Avliotis. There are water sports at Arillas, boat and Pedalo hire and from the next bay at St Stefanos there are regular boats departing for the local islands of Erricousa, Othoni and Mathraki. There are often local village festivals (called Panyiri), heavily attended by the locals. For a nominal sum there is food and copious amounts of good local wine. In fact in September Arillas has one to celebrate the new local wine produce and this is a particularly interesting one to attend!!!
