Il Vecchio Mulino
from £114 /night help
Farmhouse | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
A soothing tranquil and secluded retreat for even the most stressed urban dweller.
Pretty and full of character, this converted watermill is situated in a green valley below the lovely medieval village of Coreglia Antelminelli.
It's only about 2kms walk from the village centre, but feels well off the beaten track.
Grassy grounds and tall trees lead down to the brook that once gave life to the mill. There's a private swimming pool, bordered in natural stone. The peaceful grounds are perfect for outdoor living with a terrace in the gardens and another by the house.
Inside, the renovation work has ensured that features like the ancient wooden doorway, heavy wooden beams and terracotta floors have been beautifully restored, while the old grinding stones are displayed in the garden.
There's a large fireplace in the comfortable living and dining room - a welcome feature in spring and autumn, and the spacous kitchen is well equipped.
Up on the first floor, accessed by an open spiral stairway, are all 4 bedrooms-two doubles or twins and two singles. One of the single bedrooms has a floor hatch to a secondary access via a tiny spiral stairway - fine for children but unsuitable for toddlers.

The area of Medievale and the Garfagnana is the best area in Tuscany for walking and outdoor activities. We have a strong relationship with an international standard outdoor group www.apians.com and can help arrange mountain biking, canyoning, mountaineering and walking activities.
Coreglia is an interesting medieval village which was famous for its export all over the world of plaster figurines. There is an excellent museum in the village dedicated to the history of these local products.
The beaches of Viareggio are within easy reach, and the beautiful Roman town of Lucca, the home of Puccinni, is thirty minutes by train or car.
The spa town of Bagni di Lucca is nearby, and the cultural town of Barga, with its jazz, opera and art, can be seen from Coreglia.
Coreglia is a beautiful hilltop town which was voted a few years ago as one of the nicest villages in Italy. In the 19C Coreglia was famous for its' plaster figurine makers and sellers, skilled local men who travelled all over the world selling hand made plaster figurines. An important museum in the village commemorates these traders. No traffic can access the streets of Coreglia, adding to the peace and quiet and evoking thoughts of bygone days.
There are 3 restaurants and several cafes in the village , and a fine camp site.
The town of Barga can be seen from the village and is a few kilometres away. Other notable towns nearby are Bagni di Lucca, Pietrasanta, and the coastal resort of Viareggio.
The provincial “art” city of Lucca is 25 minutes drive, or by the local train station. Florence is around 75 minutes drive.
Directions from Pisa to Lucca, then north towards Barga. Detailed directions and recommendations provided.
