La Rocca Castello, pool, Wi-Fi
Villa | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience life within the walls of an ancient castle in the centre of a medieval Tuscan village. This traditional 3 bedroomed villa enjoys excellent views over the village rooftops and mountains beyond. The large and well kept garden has several peaceful areas, all within the perimeter wall of the old castello.
The rooms are comfortably furnished with antiques and reminders of pastimes, giving the villa an interesting and unique atmosphere. The decoration is beautifully old fashioned, with ceiling frescos and other unusual features.
There is free wi-fi in the house.
There is an 8 x 3 metre "fun" pool in the garden, good for playing in or cooling off.
Guests can help themselves to the seasonal organic produce available in the vegetable garden.
In the garden there is a fine, peaceful summerhouse with cooking facilities.
The village of Coreglia itself is a fine example of a Tuscan hill town. A quiet resort during summer, there are 3 traditional restaurants, bars and some small shops. Although the villa is accessible by road and has its own private parking, very few vehicles can access the main streets of the old village, ensuring a peaceful and traditional feel about the place, great fun and safe for children to explore.

The Tuscany region
Tuscany is the most popular region of Italy, famous for its wonderful climate, landscape, and art treasures.
The famous "art" cities of Florence, Sienna and Lucca are huge attractions, whilst the culinary tradition is there to be savoured.
The beautiful walled city of Lucca is only 30 minutes drive away, also reched by train. Lucca is one of Italy’s famous 'art cities', the labyrinth medieval streets hosting many museums and galleries. Lucca was the home of Puccini, and an opera is performed every single day of the year. There are a number of other festivals, notably the Lucca Summer Festival, which has several concerts throughout July and August, and has hosted Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Sting and Lauryn Hill among many others.
The famous outdoor Puccini festival is also held throughout July and August at nearby Torre del Lago. Coreglia is around 90minutes from Florence and 45 minutes from Pisa by train or car
Media Valle, set between Lucca and the Garfagnana, is an exotic, lush green area of Tuscany unaffected by mass tourism. The area is superb for walking and climbing, with the famous and spectacular gorge 'Orito di Bordo' nearby. There are also many ancient villages in the area, many worth exploring. The town of Barga, famous for its art exhibitions, summer opera, jazz and food festivals, is only a few kilometres away.
Also nearby is Bagni di Lucca, the spa resort of the Luchessi nobles, with its thermal baths, elegant villas and pretty surroundings. During the summer there are village festivals and concerts.
Coreglia itself is an interesting medieval town with an ancient wall surrounding its old buildings. It is recognised as one of the loveliest villages in Italy. Only the smallest of vehicles can access its narrow streets, making the village very safe for children and recalling the atmosphere of bygone days.
There are 3 restaurants in the village, friendly bars and pleasant parks.
The Garfagnana is a compact area, easily accessible and superb for walking and climbing, mountain biking and other outdoor activities. We have links to an outdoor activities centre who offer guided walks, world class gorge walking and mountain biking amongst other activities.
The whole region is well known for its excellent value cooking, using the best of local ingredients. A typical set lunch with 4 choices of pasta course, and 4 choices of main course costs only 9 Euros inclusive of bread, wine and coffee. It is possible to have a multi-course traditional Sunday lunch or dinner with ample wine, coffee and liquors for less than 25 Euros.

"Peaceful relaxing property in beautiful location"
I travelled with my adult family and one toddler - we all really loved the place: the solid old house built into castle walls, the huge garden area with various places to sit, and to eat, and to explore: with lots of colour around the house, avenues of vines, fruit trees, etc. all with amazing views and easy access to the village, which I loved. We travelled out to go sight-seeing, but loved coming back. We had temperatures in the high 30's, and the pool was well used. Wi-fi was intermittent. Don't take the high road to Barga unless you seek thrills! In the village, Bar St.Michel and the restaurant above (cash only) are excellent. There's an ATM close by. When it was time to leave, I followed the road signs for Pisa rather than the scary directions given - way too much potential for getting lost. We have lots of happy memories, and are so glad to have found this villa - it looked good on paper, and totally matched this in reality.

"Peaceful, fresh and very relaxing"
The location of the house is spectacular - great views and garden and the height of the place ensures a freshness of air which was very welcome in August. Facilities were good, lots of nice places to sit in the large garden and some toys, swing and slide for chlldren although a toddler swing would be a good idea (was quite frustrating for our toddler not to be able to use it). Pool was fine - worked for us because we had very small children and so we didn't have to worry about them falling in but a proper pool would look a lot better. Some of the furniture could do with an update - garden chairs and the mattress in the second smaller room but all in all good value for money compared to similar lets in the region and a lovely, relaxing place to stay. We all had a great time and would definitely come back.

Having recently returned from our stay at La Rocca I would just like to say what an absolutely fantastic holiday we had.
A good and informative welcome from Nora who we met up with very easily at Bar Roma.
The house and grounds were just glorious with breathtaking views and felt it was a privilege to stay there.
The house was comfortable and gloriously quirky with bags of character. We loved it.
We had some great walks in the countryside and the forests.
The town and its inhabitants were friendly and warm and we enjoyed shopping there, in the small supermarket if we were unsure of something we were offered a sample before we bought. A very nice experience,
as was the practice of leaving some fresh produce on the doorstep in the mornings.
A very tiny thing, there were plenty of deckchairs but only one sun-lounger!
I'm now harbouring a desire to return.
