Le Chene
About the home
Le Chene was build in the 1700, and has recently been renovated and has its own enclosed gardens. The rooms are graced with original exposed beams, wooden floor boards with an old terracotta floor in the lounge. As the owners live in the property for a portion of the year it has consequently been furnished to a comfortable standard with favourite items including original artwork, books, DVDs (both in French and English) and some games.
Relaxing by the pool or simply driving around this beautiful countryside exploring towns and villages that have hardly changed in centuries is breathtaking. The magnificent Gresigne forest is on your door step, and the beautiful Aveyron gorges about 20 minutes away.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn region

This area of south west France, the Tarn, is a particularly pretty and unspoilt region. The countryside is a patchwork of vineyards, sunflowers and woodland dotted with ancient farmhouses and historic towns which are criss-crossed with walking and cycling paths.
There is ample opportunity to Kayak down the Gorges, go walking in the national walking trials, horse riding, cycling or swimming. Relaxing by the pool or simply driving around this beautiful countryside exploring towns and villages that have hardly changed in centuries is breathtaking. The magnificent Gresigne forest is on your door step, and the beautiful Aveyron gorges about 20 minutes away.
Toulouse, 4th largest city in France and known as the Pink City (under 1 hour) is a very old town which has a wealth of architectural and cultural riches, and is also the centre of the European aircraft and space industry with its space museum and airbus factory.
The breathtaking sight of the Millau Bridge and the imposing “Cite de Carcassonne” are both within travelling distance. Andorra and the Pyrenees mountains are 2 1/2 hours away and the beaches of the Med 2 hours away.
The Cordes-sur-Ciel / Itzac area
For wine lovers the are many independent family run vineyards within the “Gaillac Region” where you can taste and buy wine directly from the owners.
It is only a 20 minute drive to the fine medieval city of Albi with its stunning cathedral, famous Toulouse Lautrec museum and quaint medieval streets with many shops. At the heart of the famous bastides region, the medieval town of Cordes sur Ciel (10mins) is one of the most beautiful villages in France and really does disappear into the sky. Cordes is famous for its historic buildings, medieval festivities and summer music festival and local art and crafts.
The Aveyron Gorges are about half an hour's drive away, through beautiful scenery, and even novices will enjoy the not-too-demanding pleasures of kayaking or canoeing down the river, to be picked up and driven back to your car by special bus. St Antonin Noble Val (20 mins) hugs the Aveyron river valley and its narrow streets are evocative of its past and on a Sunday morning, the bustling market is a must see.
Vaour (10 mins) has a week long jazz festival in August and all the local villages have festivals throughout the summer with food, wine and music. Full details of local festivals are available at the house.
Nearby is the Gresigne centre, with its boating/pedalo lake, swimming lake (with water-slide and life-guard), tennis courts, crazy golf, boules, bar and ice-cream parlour.
Cycling in the “Vallee du Tarn”, is just one example of numerous rides to be sampled, this one which was featured in the 2007 Tour De France, taking you along the tarn valley river, right bank then left bank between Arthes and Ambialet with countryside and views to die for! not forgetting one or two refreshments stop along the way just to completely let you appreciate the beautiful tourist randonnee.

Beware of renting this property. Six of us spent a week at the end of August 2011 there. The kitchen sink did not drain, which meant throwing washing-up water out in the garden. Neither internet and... more |

Le Chene is in a stunningly lovely, fairly isolated location but with a car shops are only 15 - 20 mins away. The accomodation is however fairly basic (although very beautiful in a romantic kind of way) a number of electric lights did not work for our stay, there was an unpleasant problem with the drains not coping in the kitchen and shower. The upstairs floorboards need attention and can pinch bare feet. The kitchen is not well equipped for catering for 6 or more people there were no large pans, only one decent sized dish for the oven and we supplemented the kitchen equipment from our own motorhome. We did expect a rustic property but Le Chene goes someway beyond rustic, the cooker hood filter stuck to our fingers with really thick greasy grime when we mistook something on it for a light switch. The swimming pool has a decking surround which at one point is barely supported by a crumbling dry stone wall and at the same side there are only three tension wires protecting from a 4ft drop, this could be a problem with children. The barn next to the pool was very useful to us providing really great shade and as we had a young baby with us it really made our holiday much happier than without it! Only one pillow per person on the beds could disappoint some people, as could the lack of mattress protectors. A big problem for us was the lack of internet access we chose La Chene because it is advertised as having it. The booking contract does state the owners can not be held responsible for breakage of amenities during the rental period however it had not been working for the occupants in the weeks prior to our booking they had only picked up wifi out by the pool from another rental. The managers of the property did kindly contact the owner for us who eventually contacted us to say the line was being tested and then that a modem would be sent out, this was interesting as the telephone line was 'dead' the whole time we were there and the modem appeared to be working perfectly?? This was a problem for us as we needed the internet for unavoidable work and had to go to Mc Donalds in Gaillac for access (they were very understanding) The point is we had a wonderful holiday at Le Chene but could imagine how much better it could be with more care and attention to detail, my daughter pointed out it was not the most expensive rental in the area, but neither is it the cheapest by any means and we would have happily paid a considerable amount more to have the cited 'issues' ironed out. Le Chene is a property crying out for further restoration, the barn which was so useful to us will not be standing long unless the very active termite and woodworm infestation is arrested. Overall we would recommend this to people who do not mind a basic level of accomodation with many creepy crawlies and plumbing issues. The loaction is hard to beat. We would not return to the property in its present state with children. We are concerned that to date, since our return the owner has still not communicated with us about the security deposit cheque. In the booking contract the owner promises to do so within one week of the end of the rental period this has not happened despite four friendly emails from us. We are aware that the security deposit has NOT been retained (nor should it have been as we left Le Chene tidier than we found it) but it would be great to have it returned or at least the assurance in writing that it has been destroyed. Just an irritating loose end from a happy family holiday. |
