The Midi-Pyrénées region
The Tarn is a region of long views and deep river gorges, fertile farmland, vineyards and forests. It is situated in the Midi-Pyrénées, the largest region in France with 8 departments within its boundary. These stretch from the Pyrenees in the South to the Massif Central in the North, and westwards from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean Sea in the east. Within its natural boundaries it offers a diversity probably unmatched elsewhere in France.
The Tarn has escaped the worst of the tourist born scourges of appalling traffic, high prices and disappointing cuisine. Historical Albi is its major centre, providing the ancient name for the region – Albigeois. Many villages and towns stage summer festivals of music and medieval pageantry, celebrated for and by the local population, and a bonus for visitors.
Cordes-sur-Ciel, located 75km north east of Toulouse,is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France. Erected initially in 1222, is the first of the bastide villages established to help protect the local population during the anti Cathar crusade of the early 13th century. As one of the gems of the region, its unique 13th and 14th century Gothic houses are reminiscent of Renaissance Tuscany, and the cobbled streets, large Halle (open air marketplace) and stone buildings are evocative of an earlier era. There are many resident artists in the village, painters, potters and sculptors. There are beautiful public gardens at the Jardins du Paradis featuring artwork intertwined with gorgeous plants . The climate is warm in summer, often reaching the 30's in mid July to August, with moderate rainfall in spring and autumn. Sometimes there is a white Christmas.
The annual medieval festival of the Grand Fauconnier is held on 13 & 14 July and is followed by Music sur Ciel, held in the Eglise Saint-Michel. Other festivals include gastronomic and Christmas fetes, and summer evening food festivals.
There is a weekly market on Saturday mornings in the lower town, on Place de la Bouteillerie. It always has a good range of seasonal fruit and vegetables, cheeses, fish, etc. If seeking a butcher, we suggest Chez Dennis, on av du 11 novembre 1918 , for his veal if nothing else. The best bread is at the La Pétrie Boulangerie, near the pharmacy. Take the trolley, walk down the hill to the market, and if the walk back is too daunting, catch the Petit Train up to Porte de Jane. Francis, who owns the Cave St Michel in the cité, provides a great range of wine and sound advice. There are good local restaurants as well, both in the village and in the nearby towns. The Gaillac vineyards are also a short drive away.
Sporting faciliies can be found near to the village - golf at Golf d'Albi Lasbordes or Golf de Florentin Gaillac, kayaking, fishing and a swimming pool (a small fee applies) in the camp site Le Garissou in Les Cabannes from June through to September, or else year round swimming at Espace Nautique Atlantis in Albi. Laguepie, 10km north of Cordes, has a swimming pontoon on the river Viaur in season, with a lovely picnic and play area. Nearby Monesties has a lake, and there are also indoor and outdoor pools in Gaillac. In winter, you can go skiing an hour north, near Rodez. There are also many beautiful walking trails, and the Chambre is on one of the rando-marche routes

"A fabulous combination of history, good taste, and comfort."
Maison des Oiseaux is perfectly located on the side of Cordes-sur-Ciel's medieval mount with easy walks to the shops below and above - and with a beautiful view of the valley. This is a perfect setting for a couple or small group who want to enjoy the French countryside or a retreat. This home is decorated with wonderful art, books, and furniture. It is stylish but comfortable. Highly recommend.
Thank you for your kind comments. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Chambre, and in the picturesque Tarn region.

"Luxury, stone walls, pagentry and good food"
What an amazing place. such a comfortable and well-equipped house with original stone walls, but all the mod cons. Wander down to the market, wake up and see the cloud below you spreading out over the countryside. We'll be back!
