The Midi-Pyrenees / Tarn region

Within one of the most interesting and beautiful areas of France, our lovely home is close to the fabulous historic Bastide circuit of which 13th century Cordes-sur-Ciel, just 4 kms away, is the jewel. The cite of Cordes is glorious - its beauty raved about by writers and painters over centuries - and for decades it has been home to scores of artists, yet tourism has been carefully controlled and the historic bastide remains totally unspoilt.
At the base of the cite is a typical, small French market town, with a variety of shops and cafes, that really bursts into life on Saturday mornings when the market takes over and everyone comes to town to meet their friends.
The entire area boasts the most wonderful scenery, with forests, rivers, historic sites of very early as well as Cathar interest, strikingly beautiful medieval bastides, and many fascinating small and large towns, each with its own weekly market, or markets, as well as festivals of all kinds. Close by are Cordes' excellent open-air swimming pole, tennis courts, wonderful walks, rivers, woods, kayaking, horse riding, fishing, golf, excellent art tuition and plenty of cafes and restaurants to suit all pockets, plus vast vineyards in which to sample seriously delicious Gaillac wines. Great places of interest locally include the beautiful city of Albi, with its famous cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec museum, the busy market town of Gaillac. centre of the wine industry and a very lively place on Fridays - market day, the small, exceedingly pretty small town of Najac and the lovely medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val, scene of the filming of the film "Charlotte Grey", a good place to visit on Sunday mornings when the inhabitants of the surrounding area turn out to frequent the market and the cafes. Historic Toulouse, the walled city of Carcassone, the Tarn Gorges and the famous Millau bridge are amongst the long list of truly interesting places to visit if you feel like going a bit further afield.
All of these sights and more are detailed in the visitors' book you will find in your holiday home.
On the days when you simply want to relax and enjoy the sun you will appreciate our lovely garden, or you can go for a swim and perhaps a picnic at the lovely open-air swimming pool nearby.
The best weather is to be had from the beginning of May until the end of October. May and June tend to be glorious, July, August and much of September blissfully warm to hot, and late September and the month of October mostly clear with lots of sunshine. The winters can be very cold but much dryer than in the UK, with frequent sunny days, whilst March and early April may be cool.

Gaillac wines are rapidly gaining the recognition they deserve - and the ideal time to get to know them is whilst watching the sun go down from one of the terraces or garden of your beautiful holiday home. Major music and medieval festivals take place in Cordes during July. Details of local places of interest, as well as sights further afield, await you at your gite.

Cordes-sur-Ciel area

The cite of Cordes boasts the most wonderful architecture dating from 1222, with narrow cobbled streets winding up, down and around. Extraordinarily beautiful, and raved about over the centuries by the likes of Camus and T.H.Lawrence, only someone without a soul could fail to fall in love with Cordes-sur-Ciel. But this is not just a heritage site; people do live there all year round and Cordes is home to many artists, welcoming you into their studios and shops. There are also music festivals and exhibitions, galleries, museums, occasional concerts in the church, fetes, umpteen restaurants and interesting small shops. The region offers many local fetes, but Cordes' July Fete, when for a whole weekend the old town celebrates its medieval history, is colourful, lively, steeped in tradition and music, and truly memorable.

The "basse ville" at the foot of the cite offers a variety of food and other shops, cafes, a post office and banks, but Cordes Saturday market is an important part of the local life as well as being excellent for local produce.
And if you enjoy visiting local markets there are many others each week in nearby towns and villages.

There is plenty to see and do right on your own doorstep, from the historic bastides circuit - of which Cordes is the jewel in the crown - and interesting historic towns, to great walks or drives through the most magnificent countryside with its hills, forests, rivers, and superb sights. There are also all kinds of sporting activities on hand - such as tennis, golf, swimming, cycling, horse-riding, caoeing, kayaking or fishing. In the summer there is an excellent outdoor swimming pool less about 6 mins away by car, or there is a superb new aqua centre open all year round in Albi. The area boasts great Gaillac wines from its miles and miles of local vineyards, plus lots of restaurants both in Cordes and in the outlying areas.
Detailed information on the region awaits your arrival.
