The Midi-Pyrenees region

Tarn is a department in South West France, named after the Tarn river. Known for its lush countryside and full rivers it also has a great expanse of vinyards most notably the Gaillac wine region.

Bordered by the Aveyron, Tarn et Garonne and Hérault departments, Albi is the principal city and is a lively and bustling place. It is also the home of the Toulouse Lautrec museum.

Built in 1222 on a prominent hill-top position, Cordes-sur-Ciel has gothic architecture dating from the 13th & 14th centuries. Much of the medieval architecture is intact and it's possible to walk up one of the two main streets and look at the Grand Ecuyer (Royal Stables), which is now a top hotel and restaurant. Further up the cobbled street is the Maison di Grand Veneur with its carved hunting scenes embellishing the stone facade.

At the top of the town is a well, nearly 1,000ft deep, which served the town of Cordes during the Crusader seiges. In the mid-20th century Cordes was revived by artists and other visitors who noticed the town's beauty.

Cordes only became Cordes-sur-Ciel (against the sky) in 1993 to reflect its site on a hill above the clouds that can cover the

valley below.

The Museum of Sugar and Chocolate is a large visitor attraction as is the typical market on Saturday.

Cordes' Grand Sites de Region status ensures that it will remain one of the most popular tourist destinations in France.
