Cordes-sur-Ciel is one of the Midi-Pyrenees' oldest walled towns, steeped in medieval history. Just 20 minutes from the Tarn Capital –Albi it is situated in the midst of a historical area famous for its links with the Cathars. Perched on a hilltop, it overlooks the Gaillac wine region to the South and Albi to the West. It is an ideal location to explore other historical treasures such as Puycelsi, Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Penne and Bruniquel. Founded in 1222 by Raimond VII, the count of Toulouse who wished this new town to be a stronghold against the troops advancing from the north to eliminate the Cathars. The town quickly became prosperous from the cloth, silk and leather businesses. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the merchants and noblemen had luxurious residences built: House of the Great Horseman, House of the Great Huntsman, House of the Great Falconer, and other Gothic palaces protected by the formidable fortifications system surrounding the city. The cobbled streets are prefect for strolling through – tiny alley ways, where on the ochre sandstone facades you can see dragons, animals and strange characters: a whole language with a mysterious meaning leading to a climate of legend.

The town is full of artists and craftsmen who contribute to the life and reputation of the city. Painting, sculpture, ceramics, leather work, masses to see and explore.

Further details outdoors

The property benefits from a huge garage on the ground floor with ample room for two cars - this is a rare feature in the town and as parking in the citadel is restricted and metered this garage is a huge advantage.
