Advert reactivated 15 May 2014 having been offline during the winter - now available to book for the 4th year running!

"Maison La Martinié" is situated in the famed "Golden Triangle" of the Tarn and is perched at the top of a hill enjoying breathtaking views of Cordes-Sur-Ciel. While the house enjoys a rural, countryside location it is situated on a quiet lane in a small hamlet with five other houses - all detached and situated in their own large private plots.

"Maison La Martinié" is the original farmhouse of the hamlet and enjoys uninterrupted views across rolling countryside to Cordes-sur-Ciel.

While the house dates back to 1800, it was completely refurbished in the autumn of 2011 and the spring of 2012 using over 200 litres of Farrow & Ball paint! The decoration of La Martinié was researched from French country interior books, in order to maintain the feel of an authentic French farmhouse.

Every last detail has been considered to create a luxury "home from home" including: antique furniture and Persian rugs throughout, French vintage chandeliers, premium white Egyptian cotton bedding, English duvets, mattresses and pillows, and thick spa quality towels.

The lounge has a huge wood-burner, two large, squashy comfy sofas, Plasma screen TV, Freesat, DVD player and Wi-fi. There is a lap-top provided for guests to use.

The French country kitchen is the heart of this home. It has a large farmhouse table seating six and opens out onto the private terrace. All modern appliances are at your disposal in the kitchen.

There are three superbly furnished double bedrooms – equipped with two kingsize and one double bed. The master bedroom has a log-burning stove.

The bathroom has been decorated using Italian limestone tiles and has a good sized shower. There is only one loo at the property.

Outside there is a private pool, BBQ, and two bicycles are available for guests to use. There is a picnic bench and a table which seats six for outside dining. The house is set in just over three acres of fenced meadow land and the gravelled courtyard which leads off the kitchen offers the upmost in privacy for you to enjoy your meals.

At the back of the house is the impressive entrance to the property which can be recognised by it's huge stone pillars and wrought iron gates. This leads into a gravelled courtyard with an open, barn style garage and wood-store.

The fortified bastide town of Cordes-sur-Ciel, (known as "the jewel of the Tarn) is approximately 3km away and has a bustling Saturday market. It is recognised as one of France's "Plus Beaux Villages" and has stunning cobbled streets, bistros, boutiques and a medieval square from where you can see our house (with the use of the telescope!) All this five minutes drive away from Maison La Martinié.

This is your 'home from home' and for the duration of your stay we want you to enjoy the same level of comfort as you do in your own home. Please visit our website, where you will find many more photos, by scrolling to the bottom of this advert and choosing the link 'Visit Site'.

The Midi-Pyrénées region

The Tarn is a department in the Midi-Pyrénées region in the southwest of France, named after the Tarn River. It was formed in 1790 of the three dioceses of Albi, Castres and Lavaur, belonging to the province of Languedoc.

Of particular note in the department are Albi (the capital), Castres, Gaillac, Lavaur, Mazamet and Cordes.

The climate here is very agreeable and we have eaten outside as late as mid November and have sat outside in thick overcoats while our faces browned in the February sunshine.

The tarn is a green region due to its high quota of rainfall during winter which gives the parched land some much needed water.

La Martinié is perfectly placed to explore the many beautiful towns and little hilltop villages most of which you can drive to in under 45 minutes.

We are perfectly placed to drive or (for those a little more energetic) cycle the bastide route. Hundreds of charming medieval towns known as Bastides are scattered throughout the Midi-Pyrenees. Our local bastide settlements, Cordes, Castelnau de Montmiral , Puycelsi, Penne, Bruniquel and Vaor have kept watch over their surrounding countryside for centuries. Discover ancient footpaths in and around these villages and stop off to sample the local food and wine in the small bars and restaurants.

Of all the medieval fortified towns, widely considered the finest in France, is Cordes sur Ciel. Known as 'the jewel of the Tarn' where little has changed since its establishment in 1222.

"The traveller who looks at the summer night from the terrace at Cordes knows that if he wishes it, the beauty of this place, day after day, will banish solitude."

- said Albert Camus in 1954

(Incidentally, our house can be seen from the terrace at Cordes with the aid of the telescope positioned outside the restaurant!)

With its bustling Saturday market, stunning cobbled streets, bistros, shops and medieval square - all just 5 minutes drive from La Martinié. Cordes music festival and medieval festival are summer highlights and the Saturday market which takes place at the bottom of the town is perfect for stocking up on local supplies of fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, cheese and wine.

The bustling heart of Gaillac town centre is 23 km from the house and has large supermarkets and many lovely bars, restaurants and shops.

25 kilometres away, approximately 30 minute drive from La Martinié is the beautiful city of Albi. In July 2010 the whole area of the Cite Episcopal was granted the status of UNESCO world heritage site. Here you will find The Cathedral of Sainte Cécile, built as a statement of the Christian faith after the upheavals of the Cathar heresy. The Cathedral took two centuries to build and is one of the most visited edifices in France. It is also famed as being the largest brick building in the world.

Albi is also home to the wonderful museum of Toulouse-Lautrec with all the artists original work in the town of his birth, and in the beautiful Castle of the Berbie (old living quarters of the Bishops). There is an abundance of lovely shops, bars, restaurants, an indoor market and many shaded squares where little bistros serve local wine and food and wine.

Another 'must visit' is St-Antonin-Noble-Val, approximately 20 minutes drive away. St-Antonin is one of the oldest bastide towns in the region. There is a large colourful market on a Sunday and there are some lovely bistros, café's bars and restaurants. One of our favourites is Le Festin De Babette and is right on the river as you go into the town.

It would be easy to carry on talking about the local beauty spots and attractions but this section is already turning into more of a book than a few well aimed paragraphs!

"French retreat"

As confirmed Francophiles, with the dream of owning our own french home, La Martinie was our starting point for exploring the Tarn. The house itself was everything we had hoped for, rustic French charm, but with all mod cons! The building itself is charming, thick stone walls with pretty blue shutters, concealing working plumbing and wifi! The bedding and towels are luxurious, and the kitchen is fully equipped if you wish to self cater. We preferred to eat in, sitting with a glass of wine watching the sun slowly sinking, listening to the total peace and quiet, whilst the BBQ took care of supper. A quick dip by still moonlight was the evenings exercise. Daily trips out exploring revealed scenery from gorges to vineyards, rivers to lakes - the area is varied and beautiful - and teeming with wildlife. Bring binoculars and a wildlife book! Hope to return soon to this beautiful house.

"French country charm at it's very best"

On planning our 6 week trip to France from West Australia we booked this accomodation based on previous reviews we had read.....we were not dissapointed.

We can only echo what has previously been written about Maison La Marinie and our week at this gorgeous farmhouse has been the highlight of our time in the Tarn.

The infomation and contact with Angie the owner prior to our trip was great and nothing was too much trouble. We knew as soon as we walked into the the house we would feel very much at home and we did.

The attention to detail and lovely decor and furnishings make this home simply delightful. From sitting in the french country kitchen having our meals to lounging on the very comfy sofas in front of a roaring log fire. The bedrooms are lovely especially the master bedroom which even has it's own log fire, but with the extremely warm bedding we didn't need to light this even though the temperatures were qute chilly at this time.

The views from the garden to the town of Cordes are quite stunning and to see the lights of the old town illuminated at night is something quite special - we are only sorry we were not there at a time of year when we could fully take advantage of the garden .......long summer evenings sat outside with a barbecue and bottle of red would be quite divine.

The farmhouse is perfectly located just a few minutes drive from Cordes and with easy access to Gaillac, Albi, Puycelci, Saint Antonin Noble Val, to name a few all of which we visited very easily. Villafrance de Rouergue and Najac are a good day out also from here.

Thank you Angie and David for sharing your home so we could experience life in this most charming part of the Tarn. For anyone planning a trip to this area we would highly recommend a stay at Maison La Martinie.

PS we enjoyed our first week so much we booked a second week on our trip and returned early December. it was much colder then so we were able to light the fire in the master bedroom which was really lovely.
